L322 td6 engine does this sound right?

I have upload a short sound file of my 2003 TD6, Does it sound right? I am hard at hearing, but to me it's like there is a
"hunt" in the idle. I is really noticeable when parked in the garage.
I think it was a lot quieter when I first bought it year go,

Sounds no worse or better than my TD6 .

Technically, the correct sound for a TD6:

1. Place 5/6 scaffolding brackets in a canvas bag (empty tin cans and nuts and bolts may work)
2. Borrow a small toy drum from a small person
3. Setup the Rolling Stones (or AC/DC) PA system on your drive
4. Find a stool
5. Turn on PA and place mic as close as possible to the stool
6. Sit on the stool, place the drum between your legs, and hold the canvas bag in one hand
7. Now bang the drum and shake the bag as vigorously as possible for as long as you can

Thumbs Up .

Ignore him above - full of sheite ! Laughing

A TD6 is a blooming good engine given the vehicles age and technology - they are very underrated !!! plus yours sounds fine - that's a normal 6 Cylinder at idle - if you listen you can hear the firing order Thumbs Up 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

The only reason I questioned it as I have some hearing loss so its hard for me to distinguish. But it just seems louder than I remember.

1. A staff member at a land rover parts place commented that mine seemed noisy.

2. When I pull up at a set of traffic lights other drivers beside me turn their head and look at the front of my Rangie looking at the engine area. seems more often now.

3 . bro inlaw says it sounds like a Ferguson tractor when i visit

4. when I drive down a narrow street pedestrians tend to look in the direction of my engine.

So I might be getting paranoid but it just seems rattlier and noisier than before.

I am going to have to stand next to another TD6 and compare the sound I hear in person.

If you are really worried, listen to a 200tdi or 300tdi and your will seem smooth and quiet.
Yours sounds no more noisy than mine. Or maybe my hearing is poor too Laughing Andrew

Mines quite noisy when it's cold but not too bad once it's warmed up.

Are all the engine covers / padding still in place as these help quite a bit? Also I believe you can buy some additional sound deadening.

Yes all engine covers etc in place. maybe I have an exhaust leak somewhere, my fuel consumption has also gone up 2-3 litres per 100kms since this noise started conincidenetly

up date: today I called around to some land rover enthusiat friends and as I pulled up into their driveway they all commented that the engine does have a noise ,

And when driven into a shed it amplified the noise. It is an intermittant slight "hunting" at idle. So I am not imagining it, the noise comes and goes.

I did fit an ERG blanking kit a last year and my consumption went up after but not as much as present, IIDTOOL showed a fault of Negative pressure deviation or something like that when the EGR blank was fitted.

Being an earlier L322 TD6 it shouldn't have needed any reprogramming for a EGR delete like later models , but as an exercise I am going to reinstall my old EGR and see if my problems go away, it cant hurt.
