New member looking for 405

Good evening ladies and gents firstly I would like to say hello ,
I am currently driving a D3 which has been a good old bus,and just done us proud in the snow and ice on Dartmoor at Christmas and Snowdonia for the last 3 days .I have looked at a D4 but see little to be gained over the older model so a Range Rover is my potential next choice
I am fully aware of the spun crankshaft and oil pump issues on the V6 units ,and LR lack of after care and aftermarket warranty short comings . Now armed with that info my guy who services D3 who had a crank snapped engine at around 55k suggested that a 4,4 engine was pretty bulletproof any comments would be most welcome .
I do recognise a couple of posters Red Merle and others from the D3 Forum

It’s a different animal to the D3/4 though, more of a brilliant luxury car for four than an unbelievably practical one for seven. Load carrying and accessories are much more limited too. However, having owned 2 SDV6’s, the SDV8 is very powerful, the torque picks up from nowhere and (being a V8 ) corners very flat. I searched long and hard for serious and recurring problems on this engine and couldn’t find any. The fuel consumption is the same as the D4 SDV6 as well.

Hi and welcome.

I too have owned the D4 and several L405s in both diesel guises and I’d echo pretty much what Red Merle says. It’s still a big old bus though and not significantly smaller in terms of what you can actually get in it and it’s actually pretty comfortable for five, even if there is a bit of a bulge in the rear floor.

I totally agree with RM in relation to fuel use too. The D4 was as economical as an evoque we had in town driving but when you got it on the motorway you could never get the D4 over 35mpg even driving easily because of its shape. I’d guess you’ll find the SDV8 a couple of mpg less around urban than the D4 and a few mpg better on a run and it a fun engine with lots of power. I currently have the V8 but I’m very fond of the tdv6 too and would pick either engine dependant on the right spec and condition of the car I was buying. Obviously if you are looking at an AB then the likelihood is that you’ll automatically gravitate to the V8 as they probably sell 8 or 9 for every one tdv6 but on lesser models that trend reverses.

Either way it’s a belting car but then so is the D4 Thumbs Up 2016 SDV8 Autobiography

Morning MZ Thumbs Up hope all is well with you , I loved my D3 but my 3.6 V8 rrff is just amazing Bow down I have had a couple of small problems over the last couple months with ignition switch and entertainment module but apart from that it's been great Thumbs Up mine is an 07 with 85k on the clock , I think the 3.6 has all the power you ever need Thumbs Up 07 VSE

Hi Stew the Chepstow camp was a hoot Iggy was mad as a box of frogs as per usual plenty of vino taken , thanks all for the comments . I did pop into Taunton LR for a little look see what on offer today , I now know that I am just not kicking tyres I will have a poke at the right car ,now the 64,000 dollar question what the best model to have HSE or Vogue

Hi Red sorry yes I ment an SE as with the Disco some extras are must have's and other are more personal choice items
I never felt to need for an HSE with premium leather and DVD rear head sets etc I opted for a loaded XS whilst it is without a sunroof it does not suffer with the leak that can go with a sunroof
So just trying to get a few pointers on what to look for

And what engine? I ask because of what I said earlier. I you want a VSE you'll find that there are SDV8's out there but they are in the minority compared to the 3.0. 2016 SDV8 Autobiography

The single biggest surprise difference that I found, moving upwards was the quality of the seats. Not the coverings, but the adjustment and support. The biggest difference that you'll find is between those with a seat squab that will slide forwards and backwards independent of the seat (Usually Vogue SE / VSE and above) and those that don't (usually Vogue).

Recommend that you try them both before deciding.

If comfort is important to you, look out for "winged" head restraints - with edges that fold forward and make it like a very posh aircraft seat (or, so I'm told!)

If you do drive a V6 for any reason, do bear in mind that they handle differently to the V8; there is an active roll control on the V8 and it seems to work.

What sort of age are you considering?

Yes re the anti roll control on the V8s.

I test drove both extensively before i purchased - and formed a firm view that the 3.0 didnt need the anti roll because it has a much lighter front end than the V8s so i thought it handles much nicer. Current

Agree Sing, the 3.0 feels, nimble, sharp, light and responsive at the front end. Handles very well for a large car without switching anything off and without any extra gizmos added.
