Probable belt failure - looking for procedure/advice

2003 V8 Vogue petrol

I recently lost power steering while driving, pulled over and noticed the coolant was boiling, and the battery light came on.

I haven’t been able to look yet, but am assuming it’s the belt. Either come off or just broken. I had heard some squeaking from the engine around Xmas but just been so busy. Not a squeal like a slipping belt but a continuous squeak.

Anyway I’m going to check it out tomorrow and wondered if anyone has a workshop manual covering this procedure or any advice on the complexity of fitting a new belt or what else to look for. I read somewhere about having to work around the air con but this may be just the diesel layout.

Any advice/tips welcome - in particular anything else worth maintaining while I am working in this area.

The squeaking is likely to have been caused by a failed tensioner or idler pulley bearing.

Download rave from the Wiki http://www.fullfatrr.com/wiki/Main_Page

As above, you may need a tensioner and check your water pump bearings for play but the belts are prone to fail if not changed in a while

The belts are off. Can’t tell at the moment if they’re damaged, but let’s face it...

Is this something I’m likely to be able to do on a drive without any way to raise the car? It looks pretty busy in there.

Very easy to do on the drive - just look at the wiki and make sure you have the right tools to take off the viscous fan.

Removing the fan makes it a much simpler job...ask most of us on here how we know Thumbs Up ______________________________

remove Fan (don't need to remove the rad) - do need special spanner and holding tool ideally _ apparently has been done by passing the belt over the fan but all i can say to that is good luck Smile

i had my undertray off when i did mine but cant remember if you need to
