Hello all

Have been experiencing intermittent problems with both rear doors not unlocking and and sometimes at the same time the steering being mega heavy. If I cycle the ignition, I can "trick" the steering into working.

I am thinking now that both faults are linked. I took the car in to my local garage and got the faults read from the car and was recommended the servotronic valve be replaced on the steering rack, but this has made no difference, the wiring was OK.

Reading further on the tinterweb, it looks like the Body Computer or BCM is at fault. The cost with coding will be around £300, but I am reluctant to just throw another load of money at this problem and still have these issues.

We love the car, its only got 87,000 mile on it, but these faults are driving me MAD! Please help!!

BTW, the car is a Td6 made in October 2004.

Deffo the bcu. U could try a second hand one on eBay for £100ish. Make sure it’s the part number impending 22.

Yep, +1 for BCM. Second hand is more trouble than it's worth. I think the module stores data like mileage etc. So it's a pain to change it to another car. Then of course you could be doing it again in 6 months. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

I'd pull a rear door lock and test power it. I did with a 9v battery. PO bought the beast with about 100k miles and bother rears and drivers door locks were dead. If you can get 10 or more cycles without a fault then I would assume the locks are good. Also if you love the truck think about investing in an iidtool. Worth every penny.

I agree with Grofus and Dolphinboy - it sounds like a typical BCM problem

To be honest I don't entirely trust the garage that quoted me on replacing the BCM, they said the coding will normally cost £45.00, but as I have spent with them already they will keep the job to £300. They said the car will not do anything without a coded BCM in place. Hmmm.

I have found it under the front passenger seat. I tried the car without the BCM connected and it starts and drives, but no locking, windows, steering and no wipers. I then plugged it back in and everything works everytime!! By unplugging it for the 30 mins must have reset it.

I am not normally this lucky, time will tell.

If £300 includes the module, then it's very reasonable. Hopefully you won't need it for a while yet.
You don't say if the garage was a LR specialist. If not, then find a good one as these cars have more quirks than most.

I have just been out in the old bus and all is good, I am keeping everything crossed!

The garage is an "All makes specialist", a friend of a friend. It was a 70 mile round trip and to no avail.

If it faults again I will get a quote from Ducky. I don't really fancy spending £100 on a used BCM as the car is a "keeper". In the 10 years this has been in the family its been faultless apart from a suspension level sensor failing.

What is a fair price for coding a new BCM to the car?

Well, I thought the reset had fixed it but the gremlins have returned with a vengeance today.

It took 7 or 6 goes with the ignition to get power steering up and running, I didn't try the rear doors. The other thing I noticed was the parking sensors not picking up when parking in front of a wall. The wife drives this a lot more than me so I will ask her later.

Yesterday it was faultless, but its quite a bit colder today so its probably related to temperature.

Will price up a BCM tomorrow.....

It looks like its turned into a permanent fault, I tried my reset routine over night and no luck.

A new BCM is £235 including delivery, so the cost of sorting out the car will still be under £300, not the end of the world.

However, my wife has found a repair service for these kind of faults. I have called them and left a message this morning, it might be they are not working until the holidays are over. They are almost on the way to Huddersfield where we are visiting on Friday. The only thing is driving it without power steering for 50 miles and will it cause damage?

I got called back and the car is booked in this Friday morning to get it plugged in to a diagnostic machine to verify 100% its the BCM causing the issue and rule out wiring.

Melvin has a BCM spare with a basic program in so we can continue our journey while he repairs our BCM, which should be ready on our return journey. Its a fixed cost repair of £70, if it cannot repaired we dont pay. I quizzed him on the chance that our BCM cannot be repaired, he replied that he can supply another BCM from his stock with the memory transferred from our old unit, this will cost £50 more though.

He sounds confident on getting this sorted as he repairs the same BCM in the BMW X5's. If all goes to plan the cost will be £70, which is better than over £280 for a new one!!

Sounds like a proper plan. I'd assume these suffer bad solder joints from vibration over time. Unless it got drowned at some point.
