right guys , is it worth dismantling the stereo ? I had an issue with one of my other cars and its was just carbon dust on the mother board causing a short , has anyone had their unit it out and repaired it successfully ?

Go for it. You can check for any dry solder joints while you're at it. Cheers, Greg

You do realise that the "stereo" is more than one unit.... You've got the head unit, the BM54 radio unit, The tv tuner unit, DSP amplifier, and CD player... If it's playing up it's more than likely water ingress in the boot. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

yes pal , I understand the workings but its switching itself off randomly , the boot area is dry as a bone so I feel its the head unit that's the cause

Or corrosion on one of the battery + feeds in the boot, most likely the BM54 Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

had it out and apart , nothing of much substance to see , bit of carbon build up on a few points , so ive cleaned what I can and re-assembled it

The thing to look at is the plugs on the BM54 tuner ( that's the one that's disappearing under the floor ) and the DSP amp... the big black bit... it is not uncommon to find corroded pins in the multi plugs. Possibly some contact cleaner might do the trick! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Ok pal , will rave it out and see what i can find

I managed to fix the random turning off of the stereo in my 2002 TD6 by removing and dismantling the BM54 and then reflowing as many of the solder joints on the circuit boards as I could. It was quite a slow job, but it did fix the the problem. There must have been a poor joint in there somewhere, but no idea where. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322
