i have been getting this dash message occasionally for the last week or so , and although the westie is getting a service next month which includes a new fuel filter i thought i'd have a go at draining the water off.

now i do have a fairly strong grip but could i undo the plastic knurled nut, could i heck!...any tips on undoing this nut? ... - .- -.

steve & mike, you cant get anything like that onto it..the 'nut' is right underneath the filter and you can just about get your fingers onto it but theres no room to grip it properly..
i did undo the fuel filter housing nuts but the fuel pipes themselves restrict movement of the loosened fuel filter so that didnt help.

the only way i can see is to undo the filter itself ,take it out and do the drain then but i'm not sure if this is possible.. ... - .- -.

If the sensor is anywhere near as reliable as the version on the Discovery 2, the Land Rover official Service recommendation will be to pull the wiring connector off the sensor , tape it up & then no longer worry - lol.
On Disco 2s , many owners or dealers would attempt to drain off water & never find any. For later versions, LR removed the sensor on UK spec vehicles with no known issues.
I'm not sure on the L322, but is the fuel tank plastic ? If so, the only cause of water in diesel should be a dodgy supply. Paul,

Would a tap spanner do it Stan?

Not sure if you've seen these but they can reach behind a sink to tighten a tap.

Stan, I had same problem, water in fuel message, and could not loosen the sensor - my remedy - remove air filter box and it will give you enough space to use small pipe wrench or pliers, or the alternative is this:

I assume someone has massively overtightened it previously as it should only be hand tight.

Stan, you should be able to pull the electrical connector off and wearing rubber gloves, be able to get enough purchase on the drain cock.

Alternatively, try and wrap a bit of rubber hose around the nut to give a better grip.

Man, it''s Saturday night and after a few whisky's, I should not be answering forum questions with words like nuts, cock, rubber and grip!!
