Just wanted to know why some people run 275/45 tyres as opposed to 255?
Im currently running 255/50 which came with it when we bought it. I have some Contis ready to put on as well but they are also 255/50. Are the prices cheaper or is it better to have a wider footprint?

I guess it depends what sort of driving you are doing. Wider tyres in winter usually makes the grip worse on snow and slush. I run 255 55 20 which have a slightly higher profile giving more comfort than the original 255 50 20 spec are good in general and snow conditions whilst also being insanely cheap (Pirelli Verdes). Tom

Bought my car with 275's. When I switched to my winter tyres, which are 255's, I noticed a quieter, more comfortable ride. I didn't notice anything much lost in grip, but I drive it for comfort, not for speed!

275 45 are range rover sport sizes. People run them when they fit sport wheels / tyres as that's what they come with.

50's have a much larger sidewall

275 40 20 are RRS tyre size not '45'... ... - .- -.

I was just wondering. I just wasnt sure whether there was any specific reason. I just checked I have Goodyear Eagle F1 in the garage and Nexen Roadians on it at the moment. The Nexens are 255/50/20 and the Goodyears are 255/55/20 which is fine either way.

In my experience 275/45/20 is the size the L322 should have always had. It's virtually the same rolling radius as 255/50/20, looks far better, handles better on road, rides better and gives more protection to the rims.

They are also available in AT sizing - they are also fine off road.

LR fit 275's to the L405, and keep the 255 on tiny wheels as a poverty spec size  2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Might be an option for me when mine need replacing then.

I see that you can get Pirelli scorpion verdes in that size and price wise the seem a lot keener than the 255 50's.

If they fill the arches a bit more as well then even better.

The 275/45 may handle better in the dry, but as mentioned earlier will be significantly worse is snow or slush and as with all wider tyres more prone to aquaplaning.

275/45 have 123mm of tyre wall
255/50 have 127mm
255/55 have 140mm

This gives the 275/45 the harshest ride and least rim protection whereas the 255/55 the most comfortable and most rim protection.

The 255/55 in the form of something like Verde All Season are very keenly priced.

Not quite correct. The 275 gives far more rim protection as it is 20mm wider, i.e. 10mm either side.

FWIW the General AT 275/45/20 are the same diameter as OE 255/50/20 due to the deeper tread - I put a tape round the circumference and measured it. If anything the 275's are a better ride as they are wider and give more of a cushion. I found they also need less PSI than standard which improves the ride even more.

Personally on such a big car I wouldn't entertain 255's anymore - plus for a 3 ton machine they look skinny. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Just fitted some 255/50 20 verde scorps to mine.

Don’t get the logic in using different sized tyres, plenty of choice in that size, winters, summers, all season, not too many AT tyres but unless you need to drive off road..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

That depends whether you're protecting the rims from pot holes/ rocks or an inability to park next to the kerb
