Counter of beans,
With only 54k on the clock, you have got plenty of time to search out somewhere to get the full oil , filter & pan service done.

I watched a couple of youtube videos of people doing oil, pan and filter changes for the 8HP70. Doesn't look £450 difficult (for those who self-maintain).

Am sure a flush requires special gear though...

OK, so AJAC8 says it's wasting my money at this mileage. But Mikey disagrees and says I should have already done it at 50k, and Very Disco agrees with him, pretty much. Cam Tech Craig says to service the gearbox every 30k but isn't clear whether that means dropping the sump, or flushing, or both. Meanwhile JLR say not to bother until 144k!!

I'm interested in all the replies, genuinely. But can you see how I'm confused? Confused

I drop the fluid and change the filter every 30k...

If i purchased a used RR with say 80 - 90k that hadn't had the gearbox fluid changed before then i would have it flushed and change the filter...

I hope that clears this up a little Thumbs Up

Craig, are you able to calculate what % of fluid you change by just dropping the pan from the amount of new fluid you use to fill it up? 50%+?.

Don’t underestimate the cost of the fluid. Lifeguard8 is very expensive., plus when you get a flush done they have devised a work-around to open up the thermostatic valve and thus change a higher % of old fluid.
Craig’s answer will be the deciding factor?

Personally I don’t like the idea of only draining x%, unless you do it regularly from a low mileage before it gets dirty/smelly.

C.O.B , you would probably be OK at only 54k it will be pretty clean. (mine was clean at 68k, )

Looks like the filter is built into the sump.

That is a very good deal. The cheapest I have seen Lifeguard8 is £30/ litre at Opie Oils. (possibly £27 with discount).
So the sump pan bolts etc. make it a bargain for a DIY job, but it will only change 40-50% of the fluid I think.

Not sure if this guy is doing it right or wrong but gives you an idea of what's involved:



To your point Mike, this guy used 5 quarts (5.7 litres converted). The kit I posted has 8 x 1 litres. You'll see he has unused bottles after he's finished.

So looks like you'd be able to get 70-80% changed by simple draining. If you're self-servicing and on a cost calculation let's just say £200 i.e. using less than the 8 litres, you could do an oil drop and new pan/filter yourself, and just keep it regular, say ever 30k as Craig says. So that way the old oil left inside doesn't ever get that old through dilution and regular changing.

Be good to know ZF procedure, I might check the RR WM.

Hi all

My 2p of advice.

I had a D3, and I’ve flushed the automatic gearbox few times over a period of 9 years.

I know ffrr and d3 are different beasts however the process is very similar.

I always flushed the oil, then drained the sump before removing it and changing the filter.

It used to cost me less than £200, and 2 hours of slow paced work with lots of tea breaks!

Opie oils has been my choice for the oil and the filter, I have acquired then via fleabay.

After every flush I used to reset the gearbox (adaptive drive) and the difference was noticeable, nicer and sharper gear changes.

So, IMHO there is no harm in changing the oil!

Just wondering how people's shift quality is?

I need to give mine a oil change and filter for sure, my shift 1st to 2nd is a touch lumpy. It also does a weird shift where it drops the revs but doesn't change to 3rd. Carry on and it shifts up. I'd describe it as a blip.

So I've got a lump and a blip.

Rooting around online I found this on a Chrysler site:

As I noted in the PM, there have been Two TSB's recently released within the last 2 weeks for the 8 speed trans on 2012 & newer 300's. I have included them both below for members to review:

TSB 21-012-14 REV. B

SUBJECT:
8 Speed Transmission Shift Adaptation, Drive Learn Procedure

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Customers may indicate that their transmission shift quality does not meet their
expectations.

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves performing a Transmission Adaptation Learn procedure based on a subjective shift quality rating evaluation.

NOTE: The adaptation drive learn procedure must be performed on all 8-speed
transmissions when the transmission is repaired/replaced and/or the Valve Body/TCU assembly (mechatronic) is replaced, or when the adaptation memory cells are cleared with the wiTECH diagnostic scan tool.

MODELS:
2012 -**2015** (LD) Charger
2012 -**2015** (LX) 300C

NOTE: **This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with the 845RE (Sales Code DFL), 8HP45 (Sales Code DFG), 8HP70 (Sales Code DFK), or 8HP90 (Sales Code
DFE) 8-Speed Automatic Transmissions.**

DISCUSSION:
The 845RE, 8HP45, 8HP70, or 8HP90 8-Speed Automatic Transmission uses a
sophisticated shift algorithm that includes learned information so that the shift quality remains excellent even as the transmission wears. This learned information is recorded in memory cells referred to “Adaptation Memory Cells”. Each applied clutch records the amount of time it takes to fill the clutch (Fast Filling Counter/Filling Time) and the amount of pressure (Filling Counter/Filling Pressure). The adaptation memory cells are set to zero (0) on every new transmission (new in vehicle and/or replaced for service) and when the transmission control module is replaced for service. In addition, the adaptation memory cells are set to zero (0) when the transmission control module adaptation memory cells are cleared using the wiTECH diagnostic scan tool. Until the adaptation has been learned/relearned, the transmission shift quality may not meet the customers expectations.

NOTE: Anytime the transmission has been overhauled (unless the Valve Body/TCU
assembly (mechatronic) was replaced), the adaptation memory cells must be
cleared using the wiTECH diagnostic scan tool.

The adaptation memory cells appear on the wiTECH for every clutch. Each clutch will include:
· Fast Filling Counter = the number of filling time events that has taken place.
· Filling Time = +/- number of ms (milli seconds) from zero (standard set value).
· Filling Counter = the number of filling pressure events that has taken place.
· Filling Pressure = +/- mb (millibar)/PSI (Pounds Per Square Inch) from zero
(standard set value).

If the adaptation memory cell “counter” is zero (0), than the adaptation memory cell has not been updated. The filling counter ideally should be at least 12 (6 on 8HP70/90) and Fast Filling counter at least 4 (2 on 8HP70/90) to improve shift quality and with each subsequent count, shift quality will improve even more.

Flash: Transmission Shift Enhancements

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with new software.

MODELS:
2013 (LD) Charger
2013 (LX) 300

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with the WA580 Automatic Transmission (Sales Codes DGJ).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The following Transmission Control Module (TCM) calibration improvements are available for vehicles equipped with WA580 Automatic Transmission (Sales Code DGJ) and are broken down per engine application.

3.6L Engine
· Hanging in gear during HOT ambient temperature conditions and high engine loads.
· Excessive pedal needed to downshift in high altitudes (i.e. passing).
· Poor shift quality, or high transmission temperatures during track or sport driving.

5.7L Engine
· Hanging in gear at high engine speeds during aggressive driving.
· Gear shift point enhancements during high load or race track driving.
· Excessive pedal needed to downshift in high altitudes (i.e. passing).
· Poor shift quality or high transmission temperatures during track or sport driving.
· Improved acceleration response from speeds greater than 36 Mph (58 Kph) (Japan Market Only).
· Bump sensation felt during deceleration or braking.

6.4L Engine
· Bump sensation felt during deceleration or braking.
· Inconsistent downshift during Wide Open Throttle (WOT) accelerations at highway
speeds (i.e. passing).
· Transmission enhancements to improve acceleration while in reverse going uphill on
steep grades.

3.0L Engine (LX Only)
· Erratic excessive shifting during low speed, light pedal driving.

There's also talk of a 30-min battery disconnect which will be worth a try.

Main thing I found interesting was that there are some TSB's for the 8-speed. Has anyone heard about these? Or would they be only for the Chryslers?

When I had my trany service, after the flush, ZF technician took car for a drive, I went with him, and drove car for 15~20 min. with laptop in his lap. he said after the flush treni needed software flush to. I did not have any problems with trani before nor after and in all honesty could not tell any difference after fluid change.

Mine was reset to factory settings??
They told me to expect some very strange gear changes for the first couple of hundred miles whilst it learned my style of driving.
The first week I felt that it was holding gears a bit longer and changes were very visible on the Rev counter, but within a week it was back to what I considered normal and ,like Nino , I can no longer tell any difference from before the fluid change.
I just wish that they had changed the sump and filter at the same time.
