Power flush for 8HP70 gearbox?

I've read several threads on here about changing the gearbox fluid [on a 2011 L322 TDV8 in my case, 54,000 miles with no issues], but I just got very confused! Some posters such as mikey seemed to advocate a power flush on its own. Others said, "no just change the sump pan + filter even if it only changes half the fluid". Then Cam-Tech Craig Bow down said you really must change the sump pan + filter, but I was unclear whether he meant to do a power flush AS WELL.

Did this ever get resolved? I'm keen to do some preventative maintenance, but would prefer it was done properly.

So my question is this: does anyone reputable offer a power flush together with a filter change on this gearbox?

Why would you flush at 54k? Waste of money IMHO.

I have just changed ATF at 90k inc filter etc without a flush no real noticeable difference other than peace of mind so am not convinced what a flush would have achieved. (other than the horror stories of the disruption a flush can cause).

Because ZF say it should be flushed at 50k? Confused

Preventative maintenance will always be cheaper than dealing with the aftermath of poor maintenance Thumbs Up

Well, the first three replies above sort of prove my point - confusion reigns! Perhaps I should contact ZF directly....

The LR Inspection 2 sheet states 9 years or 144k miles for oil and filter change for a 4.4 8speed box.

Confusion borne from info from the manufacture of the box and the manufacturer of the vehicle. It always struck me a strange that sealed for life meant until 9 yrs.

The OP actual question indicates you have already decided to flush so time would be well spent seeking out the risks if any and the reason LR say (effectively) not to.

It would also be worth seeking clarification if the ZF advice is corporate policy for their products or specific to the box and for what reason.

A chat with RRPhil here would also be well worth it.

For what its worth... I have just serviced wife’s 2yr old D4 8sp @ 30k miles and will do every 30k onwards...
I currently have a 3.6 FF and have just given it its 3rd gearbox oil & filter change @ 90k miles (owned by my customer for some years prior to my ownership and serviced by us throughout)

If i bought a car with say 80 or 90k then i would have it flushed & the filter/sump changed IF it had never had the gearbox serviced in its life...

Just my 2p worth sir Bow down

I had my 2012 TDV8 mega flushed at 60 K miles soon after buying it in 2015, still under warranty back then, and the oil was dirty. they replace the sump pan and filter, which you should always anyway.

Same deal 8 years before on my TD6, 3 years old back then, only 36.000 miles on the clock upon purchase and same thing very dirty oil. I also had my 4.4L PETROL V8 done upon purchase: same deal super dirty oil and it did make a difference when driving out from the place once serviced!

you must understand manufacturers build cars with an expected 'life' of 5 years, and they must be out of the circuit within 10 years while giving customers (original owners or lease company) the feel the ownership cost will be minimal especially in service. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

With 115K km on my I did contact ZF in Friedrichshafen and They recommend fluid replacement at 120K km for the 8 speed gearboxes. so I went to Vienna -nearest ZF to me- and did the flush wich included pan and filter replacement. price was 615 Euros.

That sounds a very good price Nino for oil & filter.
I paid £450inc vat for just an oil change (flush) but really wish I had paid the extra to get the filter done at the same time for total peace of mind. (67k miles)
I can’t tell any difference before and after, but was told old oil was very clean compared to others they had done.

Sounds like a nice idea Nino, but sorry I am fully booked up holiday wise for next year.
I am off to Tenerife for 4weeks after Xmas for a bit of winter sunshine, then I am booked to tour Spain and Portugal later in the summer to give B.B. a bit of a blast !!!

Back on thread, have you got the old filter?
Is it made of wire mesh?
Please post pictures if possible.

I am really regretting not getting mine changed when I got the oil flush, but I am thinking I will get it done again when I get to 100k miles .

Time flies, it is 12months this week since the “gang” got the Workshop Manual.
Seasons Greetings Nino, Adrian & Stan.

Mike, I did't save the old treny pan but I have new one( got the kit when I was doing the flash)

red arrow point to fluid exit, white arrow to the magnets

this is fluid inlet, you can see filter body, it appears to be real paper filter

Thumbs Up

Thanks Nino,
It doesn’t look anything like I imagined, but I definitely wouldn’t have the fluid changed without changing the filter and pan again, even though my gearbox has always been silky smooth.
We live and learn. 😂😂.
