Basically I bought a 2005 td6 earlier this year and opted for that engine as I've had 2 bmw 530d's previously and kind of know it as regards servicing / common faults etc.

Trouble is, my Mrs drives it on a daily basis and as she does very few miles it delivers quite poor mpg to the point I wish I'd bought a petrol in the first place.

My brother in law has shown interest in the car and claims he would like to buy it next year when the lease on his current car expires. He does quite a bit of motorway driving so it would be better suited to him.

This gives me the perfect opportunity to leap into an sc but it's completely unknown territory to me engine wise.

Would I be making a terrible mistake? What should I look out for??

Basically they are a vastly better car with a better 6-speed gearbox. Engine is good too.

i had a go in the td6 then a go in the 4.2 made my mind up straight away had it 3 years now and still love it. 14mpg round town 17-20 open road . like to put me foot down HOW RELIABLE ARE THEY ? not let me down yet..................................................................

@chex you’ve obviously had an unfortunate experience with yours.

I’ve got nearly 190,000 reasons why they’re almost bombproof (granted, except for the brittle chain guides)

It’s always been the ancillaries which failed (water pump x2, radiator, alternator, fuel pump) in mine.

Add to that list weeping cam cover gaskets, PCV hoses falling apart all the time, vanos seals are useless and make the car sound like a diesel, exploding coolant tank, the ridiculous operating temperature of the engine which makes all the plastic under the bonnet brittle.

The alternator and water pump are also annoying and part of the reason I don't like the engine much. The jag engine is also much smoother. 2004 L322 V8

Yup, you're bang on bud. forgot about those little things like PCV hoses .....
