One headlight is looking at the floor.

I jumped into fatty last night for a quick run down to B&Q and the drivers headlight was looking at the floor. Turned of and started again with the headlights on and it went through its tests left right up down but it ends up aimed on the floor. Took head light out had a look every thing moves ok. Re-fitted still the same, disconnected the battery to reset the ecu's and still the same, drivers headlight aimed at the floor. Please help ????? If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

It's possible the arm that connects the leveling motor to the reflector has detached.

If it is, the you'll need to take the headlight out and reconnect it through the lamp access cover.

But, if the light is still doing its "boss eyed thing” when starting? i would assume the motors are still connected? it could simply be the up/down motor stuck on for a few too many turns and adjusted the light to the floor?

This would just mean winding it back up manually Thumbs Up

Thanks for the advice, yes the lights test ok and were cornering ok just o/s pointing at the floor. Took the head light out could not see any motors or links through the big hole at the back.

So how do you wind the motors back into position ?? or is it a test book thing If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

The same as you would adjust the light for an MOT etc... Allen key on the top from memory Thumbs Up

Im sure Stan had an image in the wiki for headlamp aim adjustment Thumbs Up

that image is for normal headlight adjustment craig, noworries has an AFS system so it sounds like the vertical stepper motor has failed ..

@noworries , theres an explanation on how the AFS works in the WM .. ... - .- -.

I was going to suggest that the headlight adjusters adjust the whole head light assy not just single eye part. Going to look at the wiki section Thanks If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Ahh WM workshop manual not Wiki being dense again If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

my drivers side one was aeroplane spotting when I got it , turned out to be one of the mounting rods inside had come adrift , reattached and all was well

^ that's what happened to mine.

The lamp was pointing at the floor.....gave the unit a knock with my hand and could see the reflector move.

Took the headlight out, shook it around and the arm that connects the motor to the reflector fell out.

Simple job to reconnect it and no problems since.

Up-date for the above problem.
I had stripped the drivers headlight out a couple of weeks ago and could not find any linkbars disconnected or anything visually amiss. Stripped the whole thing apart and removed the vertical actuation motor. The motor is a small black plastic motor with a ball on the end that connects to the HID projector carrier which on the AFS headlights moves both ways. The side to side horizontal movement is a worm screw which can be turned by hand, the up and down seams seized or locked. I had to put the headlight back in so SWMBO could use it after a very expensive couple of weeks, compressor and front struts due to failed airbag (yes Craig had told me to keep the anvils clean as often as possible) The motor has a Hella part no on it and searches on the internet finds ebay but only sold ones. I scrounged some crashed headlights from a mate but hthey are not AFS and did not have the motors I wanted. One came up but with an -03 ending not -02 I asked the seller if he knew the difference but he replied "don't know mate just strip them out of smashed headlights and sell them" not helpful but honest. A week later a -02 came up but out of a Merc of some sort, pictures showed the wiring to be different, I asked if the short wires could be un-plugged as per the Range Rover and another helpful ebay reply "don't know mate I just sell the things" Getting Censored off I took the headlight back out today and stripped it down again. Had the motor in my hand plugged in ( Most important I had removed the HID ballast as I did not want a 50,000 volt kick) I got SWMBO to fire up the fatty with the lights on and I could feel the motor trying to work but nothing happening. Time to pull it apart, in for a penny and all that. I inserted four compass points into the plastic lugs around the motor and prised apart. Simple inside a motor static winding fed by 4 wires from the plug. The rotating armature that seams to be plastic but can't be operates a thread to move the headlight. The thread was jammed at its shortest end so once moved everything seamed fine. Reassembled with lube plugged into a still stripped headlight and tested. Fired up fatty with the lights on motor moved out and back and settled in the middle, great !! Re-built head light tested ok, tested again fatty cranked rather slowly due to being sat there with doors open ect and headlight was looking at the floor again. Now I know how to strip a headlight motor removed and pulled apart it was jammed short again. Applied Vaseline grease to the threads and re-built again. Tested every seams fine at the moment but if it fails again I will get one from the internet and use its guts in mine. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

If I do have to go in there again I will take pictures, as there is as ever an easy way and a hard way. When you first strip one out you automatically head for the torx screws, all this does is remove the surrounds ect. What you need to go for is the white 90deg turn clips, turn these and the light literally falls apart. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
