Think at 41 mpg it might be cheaper in the long run to get a nun to chauffeur me around Rolling with laughter

For the first 750 miles, driving like a nun, it was an returning an average of 25.6 mpg (brim to brim, not via trip computer).

The most recent 161 miles, with a bit more round town and some shorter journeys and using a little bit more of the performance, it returned 21.9 mpg (again, brim to brim),

Two things are very apparent: The trip computer is optimistic by around 4 mpg and the economy is badly affected by hilly terrain and short trips.

To get an indicated 33-34 mpg (probably around 29-30 via brim to brim) needs a flat road and around 45-55 mph. I’m not complaining here but, optimistic trip computer aside, I wonder how so many of you are getting usefully more?

Motorway journeys sticking to 75 ish when the engine is just ticking over in 8th gear returns in the low 30's. Short local trips 8/10 miles and a bit of throttle gives me 25/26. Careful driving with no wide throttle openings or hard braking over mixed journeys I can get 28 average.

All figures are brim to brim, every RR we have had over estimates the OBC by 2-3 mpg - a similar sum to the speedo in % terms. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Here's a question for you clever guys, seriously.

Brim to brim, especially when averaged over several fills pretty much satisfies me that the amount of fuel I am using in the calculation is accurate but what is the best way to know how far I have travelled? The odometer in the vehicle is also inaccurate and will also vary with tyre wear. Is it such a small difference that it doesn't matter?

My L405 4.4 is showing about 33 on the computer but calculates at about 30 but this is with generally careful driving/cruising.

My indicated mpg values are from trip computer and mainly flat roads from Reading to North London M4, M25 and inner London. Speed wise, flowing on the rightmost lane Smile I was expecting the trip computer to be optimistic but still it is much better than my exceptions for such big car. Fighting with Hunters to sort out the suspension knock, car been there 2 times already with no success yet. Other than that great car.

yes, i get about the same, average 30-31mpg, done about 14k miles now, and i drove a 3litre v6 and for me its not as good as the v8, in sound and the way it just shifts from standing start, ie traffic lights.
Also if you can drive and trust the car, it will go round bends pretty well and will surprise you with the grip.

I did a journey yesterday from Stoke to North London, the app on my phone reckoned 41.6mpg out of my 4.4 V8
I had to look twice to believe it and managed 37.2 mpg coming back today Thumbs Up

to balance it up i did get 18mpg going to get a chinese the other night Rolling with laughter .

I'm not sure how accurate these apps are, as the figures seem impossibly high.

I've been doing some long journeys around Europe recently, and the trip has been showing low 30's. Yesterday I had to go to Amsterdam and back so I thought I'd see what MPG I was getting by manually calculating it.

Brimmed the tank and reset the mileage. Drove a total of 628 miles yesterday, and then brimmed the tank again, which was 89.48 litres. (89.48l = 19.68 UKgal)

The FF was showing 33.9 MPG which I thought was amazing, and when I calculated it manually, I got 31.91 MPG (628 / 19.68 = 31.9105)

Average speed for the journey was 54mph with 90% motorway driving.

So overall I'm still really happy with the result, given it's a +2tn vehicle with a V8, but I can't see how one could go from 32MPG to 38MPG, which is why I have a feeling that these apps are a tad over optimistic.

Happy to be proven wrong though Very Happy Tom

I like to keep a log of mileage/fuel use out of general interest and over the first 4 tanks, the actual mpg is 8.5% lower than the figure from the computer / the app.

Not that different from my 7 series, although that was more economical despite having a twin turbo petrol V8. The Golf R is very accurate, less than 1% difference. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid
