Stan, I get that, but there have been a few times now when I am replying to someone earlier in the 'conversation' where I have had the quote removed and then my reply doesn't make much sense, it sounds like I am replying to the person who has just spoke and not to something that was said earlier in the conversation.

And on a few threads I have had to trawl back through the replies to piece together who someone is replying too.

I never quote when I am replying directly, but when I am replying to a specific poster and there have been more replies since then I just thought it less confusing.

But I will stop quoting in future if that is preferred.

I guess in the real world with a 3 or 4 way conversation of course you don't repeat what they have said, but then you do look at the person you are answering, which the above now covers.

Right, so my one RRSport wheel nut arrived today and I've parked the car and just removed one existing wheel nut without loosening any others and with the car on the ground. The new nut is certainly what I would call a snug fit, taking considerable force to partially tighten it. It almost felt as if it was cross threaded.

Is this what I should expect? I suppose, with the wheel clamped firmly on to the centre locating part of the hub with the smaller FFRR nuts, it might be slightly rotated from the correct position. The new nut measures 22.63mm on my "Aldi's best" micrometer.

This picture shows the disclouration of the new nut over the distance it was wound in.

jack up that one wheel, loosen all the nuts and replace one by one...they should be a tight'ish fit  ... - .- -.

As Stan says - basically the holes in your wheels are too big for the nuts you have - so they will likely be slightly off centre - loosen them all and that should give the movement you need.

It's me again

I'm still trying to find either another matching 19" wheel (just missed out a couple of times on ebay) to give me a spare or, if I can't, get the used 18" wheel set from the breaker and buy at least 4 new tyres.

But immediately, I need to get wheel alignment done while the wear on the inside edge of the front 2 tyres leaves them still just about legal. I've looked up the procedure for setting the suspension to standard height for tracking to be done.

Having moved commitments to give me a decent time window, I booked into ATS for a 4-wheel alignment, only to be told on arrival that they wouldn't align wheels with worn tyres. I was sent away.

I've rung Kwik Fit, who say they will do the alignment and have not heard of any requirement that the tyres have to be little worn.

I thought that wheel alignment just related to the wheels. Is this not so? Is the ATS laser alignment different from the Kwik fit Hunter Hawkeye?

Only the front tyres seem to be wearing oddly, so would I get away with a simple front-wheel alignment?

If your tyres are wearing on the inside edge you have to ask why?

Have you got any clunking etc going over rough roads etc.?

It may be the bushes are worn in your control arms and need replacing, if you get the alignment done now you are just hiding the wear, but you may find you have to do them again shortly when you replace the bushes.

Of course it could juts be there is too much negative camber.

I would guess if there is a big difference between the wear rate on the inside edge and the outside edge, then it may not be worth doing the alignment, but I would still want someone to have a look at the camber and see if it is seriously out.


What load rating are the tyres you have on there now?
On really stiff sidewall tyres you can get inside edge wear even if the camber is within spec. sometimes worth giving a bit more positive camber to compensate.

Have you not got a local tyre place near you? The bit chains normally have to play by the book too much, finding a local tyre centre who will help is priceless. Porsche 911 (996)

Well, it's like the chicken and the egg, isn't it.

There was some clunking, so I put it into my "traditional mechanic" place that does a lot of Disco 1 & 2's. They replaced front and rear near side "stabilisation link bars" and it immediately clunked far less. There is still a small amount of clunking, though. Maybe the wrong size lug nuts contribute to this, but I don't want to spend on them if I end up changing the wheels to fit the nuts. Tyre pressures are correct and all wheel nuts done up tight ( I'm still looking for where I put the torque wrench that I haven't needed in years). It drives nicely and doesn't wander or pull.

The current tyres are 255/50 R19 107V. 3 are HiFly (2 labelled Vigorous) and one Nexen. Someone is advertising a RRS wheel and tyre fairly locally with a 225/50 R19 tyre. Its pic looks the same as my wheels, but is the wheel width likely to be the same? He hasn't responded to a question. FFRR 19" tyres should, of course be 255/55 R19 anyway. I understand wheel size should be 8Jx19 ET57. Is this likely to be visible if a wheel is taken off?

There is a good local independent tyre place, but I don't think they do 4-wheel alignment. The next nearest place is ATS. I have had bad experiences with them with boat trailer tyres and with wheel nuts on the Disco. Some way away, there is Kwik Fit, who sounded quite positive and who offer more expensive 4-wheel alignment, but with multiple free re-alignment within 2 years. That, and buying 5 replacement wheels and tyres is starting to sound more attractive, although the cost of about £700 will seriously delay being able to afford other repairs. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

Yes, I did read and absorb the earlier reply. It did make me wonder whether, with the potholes and subsidence in the roads round here, the wheels might occasionally rotate slightly on the hubs. Very unlikely!

There is another question. I've been looking, amongst other places, on ebay and noticing that there seem to be several adverts for 19" wheels and tyres that appear to list the wheels as being 18". One current one is ebay item eBay Item No. 253198972229, where the pictures seem to show the wheels as being 8Jx18EH2 53 and the ad clearly states 19" tyres. Does the EH, extended hump, on these wheels mean that they take different tyres?

Another example where you don't have to look at pictures is item eBay Item No. 222606641647.

First advert they look like 18's and if that is a pic of the inside of them they are 18s.

EH is just the type of wheel 'bead' that is used.
EH is Extended Hump and has been used on most for a few years now, EH2 it is more known as now, EH2+ is extended further and is a legal requirement for run flats, being more aggressive it keeps the tyre on the wheel far better if there is a flat.

Oh yeah, inside edge wear.

At the end of the day you only really have one option, buy new tyres (decent brand, you can get crappy wear from crappy tyres) and put them on, then get them to check your alignment, local place should be £20 to do that for you. If it is within spec drive it for a while and keep an eye on wear.
If it starts to wear you need to work out why, it will be alignment if the tyre pressures are correct, so work out why it is out.
Either worn suspension bits, usually bushes, or you have hit something and it is bent. Porsche 911 (996)

At last, and much more expensively than I'd hoped, I've got 2 new Pirelli's on the front, 2 good HiFly's on the back and a decent spare wheel and tyre. All 255/50 R19's, so not the 255/55 19 or ideally 255/60 18's that I really wanted, but they will have to do.

Correct wheel nuts for the RRS wheels all round as well. It's probably psychological, but I'm convinced that there is less of the low-level clonking with the new wheel nuts and tyres.

KwikFit did the tyres and 4 wheel alignment. Expensive, but I'm hoping that if more suspension work is done, the free for 2 years re-alignment will be honoured in spite of what the cynics I've encountered have said.

For the record, I bought one 23mm wheel nut and the 20, 22.5 ones I fitted. They all measured the same on my micrometer, 22.65mm. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????
