Vanos seloniod gaskets

Seems my oil leak is coming from both vanos seloniod gaskets, after a good steam clean you can see oil trickling out of them both.

Does anybody know the part numbers & the best place to get these gaskets?
I looked in the rave manual but couldn't find them & checked a few online shops but again couldn't find them. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

Here you go

And if you want to do your cam covers

I used a little pick tool to wiggle them off each a bit from side to side.
I also removed a few bits to get better access but easy job

Brilliant holiday chicken, that's what I'm after. Did you have to remove seloniods or do they slip over? Also how much work is cam covers? Read something online about doing lower tensioner too while at it 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

You dont need to remove the solenoids although i do remember removing a little extra than rave states to gain access but basically its just two bolts per side and then wiggle the seals out which is a little tricky, give the solenoid and sealing face as much of a clean as possible and push the new ones in place. my old ones had cracked probably due to the excessive heat the M62 runs at, another google for you is thermostat conversion if you are bored...

The cam covers are more involved but nothing too tricky again. The worst part is when you have removed the covers, the seals are stuck in the groove so heat them with a hot air gun and they turn all floppy and fall out almost but the paint will have bubbled up all over the inside of the cam covers and in the sealing groove which needs to be cleaned out. ideally sand blast and powder coat but i used a fibre wheel on my dremmel to clean out the grooves but it's messy. the covers are magnesium alloy which may need to be considered when powder coating.
you will also need to buy the correct sealer as this needs to be applied in several places or the new seals will leak.

Have you got a copy of the Rave manual ?

Couple of useful links below
http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/6-range-r...750?page=1

And this is a good how to

http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthre...eplacement

Sealant link below although i ordered a larger tube of the loctite / henkel brand as the landrover sealant is made by them

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-LAND-ROV...234d6870e2

What i bought after used a standard red RTV which leaked.

http://www.bearing-king.co.uk/bearing/loct...300ml/9583

I used the sealer to stick the gasket in place in the cam cover to stop it falling out when replacing the covers.

if its the cam chain tensioner on the left hand side facing the engine then i didn't do it but it would be a good idea to do it but i dont know how tricky this is as there isn't a great deal of room down there.

The manual says to remove the dipstick tube but i didnt manage that when doing the cam cover so just encouraged it out the way

How is your PCV system as this is another very common fail and oil leak as the valve fails causing excess pressure and also the pipes turn to mush leaking oil everywhere.

Something for you to get on with but make sure yo have the rave manual as this is a fantastic help

Can you replace the Vanos solenoid gaskets without removing the coolant pipes??

Not really wanting to drain the coolant out to replace them

Yes, it's not a bad job but you do need a special socket / modified box spanner to do it and a metric fine bolt if you want to replace the non return valves but if it's just the gaskets then all you need is a little patience and a little pick tool to gently prise off the old gaskets

It is just the gaskets, I have got oil leaking down the face of the engine, I was worried there was a leak other than the gaskets with the amount of oil around the sump engine and frame, but after having a good look yesterday underneath and above and a clean up with the leak being right behind the viscous fan I think that it is being blown al over the place - and thinking about how much oil I've topped up it kinda makes sense!!

The other common leak at the front of the engine is the upper timing chain cover gaskets that go hard the same as the cam cover gaskets but that is much more involved.
I think i may have removed or loosened a tensioner but not sure that may have been my water pump.

You can see the upper timing cover gasket leaks on mine.
Clean up the solenoid as best you can with scotchbrite and wd 40 to let the gasket slip over it easier and apply sealant to the inside of the seal and the sealing face.

It's hard to tell if it's just the solenoid seal or the solenoid seal and cam cover gaskets Big Cry Big Cry

Don't worry, just do the solenoid seals and give it a good clean and go from there.
If you have had your cam covers done then they are the same material and mine were hard and brittle.
I would think most of it is solenoid seals
Just whip them off if it is the upper timing chain covers Very Happy
