Seems my oil leak is coming from both vanos seloniod gaskets, after a good steam clean you can see oil trickling out of them both.

Brilliant holiday chicken, that's what I'm after. Did you have to remove seloniods or do they slip over? Also how much work is cam covers? Read something online about doing lower tensioner too while at it 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography |

You dont need to remove the solenoids although i do remember removing a little extra than rave states to gain access but basically its just two bolts per side and then wiggle the seals out which is a little tricky, give the solenoid and sealing face as much of a clean as possible and push the new ones in place. my old ones had cracked probably due to the excessive heat the M62 runs at, another google for you is thermostat conversion if you are bored...

Can you replace the Vanos solenoid gaskets without removing the coolant pipes??

It is just the gaskets, I have got oil leaking down the face of the engine, I was worried there was a leak other than the gaskets with the amount of oil around the sump engine and frame, but after having a good look yesterday underneath and above and a clean up with the leak being right behind the viscous fan I think that it is being blown al over the place - and thinking about how much oil I've topped up it kinda makes sense!! |

The other common leak at the front of the engine is the upper timing chain cover gaskets that go hard the same as the cam cover gaskets but that is much more involved.

It's hard to tell if it's just the solenoid seal or the solenoid seal and cam cover gaskets |

Don't worry, just do the solenoid seals and give it a good clean and go from there.
