dpf's, catalytic converters - they all break down and need servicing every set number of miles. is that the solution? plus the waste more fuel apart from the co2 they produce to make these things in the first place.

15 years ago i had a mk4 golf 1.9 tdi - 60mpg without even trying, no matter the congestion or the road that thing will get 60mpg(keep in mind i drive preety much pedal to the metal). comparable engine nowadays is the 1.6 tdi both 110bhp-ish both diesel and id be lucky to crack 40 in the new 1. just for comparison i get 33mpg out of my 640d, 30mpg out of a 320d and 19mpg out of the sdv8. my drivving style aint changed.

My POV is air quality. The topic quickly mushrooms..

In my opinion we need stop/start. Speed humps removed. Euro6 lorries and buses. Hybrids. Then Hybrids with battery only range. Then battery-only. And anything else too. It's all a journey towards less air pollution and for sure only one initiative won't do it. The way to fix any big problem is divide it down into smaller problems that can be fixed.

To your point on MPG - engines are a trifecta of POWER vs EMISSIONS vs FUEL CONSUMPTION. One affects another. The manufacturers have been fiddling the books anyway so who knows what numbers are correct.

Does stop/start reduce traffic light pollution?
In my opinion, yes.

Can we solve the bigger issues on this forum?
Absolutely not.

And we all drive Range Rovers which doesn't help. I'll be the first to admit that.

Greg. Cheers, Greg

About CO2 https://www.maximumyield.com/the-missing-ingredient-co2/2/1214

The goal of CO2 enrichment is to reduce the time from seedling to harvest and to speed up growth and increase yields. Plants grown with elevated CO2 levels are better able to resist insects and diseases, which makes for healthier plants. For example, in a recent study lettuce was grown in a greenhouse with ambient air versus lettuce grown in a greenhouse with enrichment.

The test showed the lettuce grown in the greenhouse with ambient air was ready to harvest in 59 days. In the greenhouse with CO2 enrichment, the lettuce was harvested in 48 days. By weight, the CO2-enriched greenhouse lettuce weighed 30% more. In studies here at our farm, we have found that by supplying tomato plants with elevated CO2, those plants produced 20% more tomatoes than plants that did not receive the elevated levels. By harvestable weight, the plants receiving more CO2 out-produced those without by 25%.

Tests performed on strawberries showed that strawberries grown with elevated levels of CO2 contained more sugars and physical mass to support a greater number flowering sites. The fact that there were more flowering sites led to a greater number of strawberries being formed, which led to more overall production. 2017 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 silicon silver

Start/stop is bad for your engine. What's worst than stop an engine running when it's hot. Turbo doesn't get cool oil and what about cilinderheads?

Also cross a busy road it's dangerous when the engine swtiches off and takes that extra second to re-start. It doens't help you to cross safe a road.

In terms of cost. Does LR counts the engine switch off cycles? At Volvo you have to go the garage for a new battery after a number of engine starts. And the second time also for the starter engine. ££££££ 2017 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 silicon silver

So the overall consensus on stop / start so far seems to be negative (probably not a surprise to me).

The sister forum for the Evoque refers to a technique for disconnecting a secondary battery to disable the stop / start. I presume this might also work for the 405 - anyone tried it? 2016 SDV8 AB

I used to hate stop start, but now I have one avoiding it cutting in is easy.

If I just hold it lightly on the brake - it doesn't stop the engine. The engine stop only cuts in on mine on full depression of the brake pedal.

You can either control it by judicious use of the pedal or just turn it off.

If anyone has ever driven a pig with stop start - now that is feckin annoying Evil or Very Mad 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Guess it's just what you get used to.

The FF has stop start and the Abarth doesn't. I now find it strange in the Abarth that when I'm stopped at lights the engine is still running Laughing
