Interested to know patters of use of this feature by others.

It seems to me that the advantages of leaving the system switched on are the potential benefits to the environment and fuel economy.

Potential disadvantages (to my layman's view at least) are the increased engine & other component wear as well as the general nuisance of the engine switching off just as traffic lights turn green...

When I do have the system switched on, I tend to restart the engine by blipping the throttle rather than letting go of the brake as I somehow think that there's an extra strain on the transmission otherwise. 2016 SDV8 AB

stop start doesnt save fuel nor does it save the environment. stop start is only there to bring down co2 rating whenbeing emissions tested.

it wont stop start the engine if the engine aint upto operating temperature nor does it cause any wear.

The single advantage of the system is to provide the best possible data for the official fuel consumption and emission figures, where the programming of the rolling road assumes a remarkable amount of idling. The practical upshot of which, is that we get to pay less tax.

Hate the thing, always turn it off when I remember. I wish it could be permanently disabled!

me too, i wonder why these tuning companies dont offer a permanent stop/start disabling option. surely it cant be that hard

I think the Stop/Start systems fitted to cars are classified as part of the emissions control system so cannot be removed/permanently disabled. Same principle as the DPF I think. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

i dunno what its like in the uk now, but until 4/5 years ago you could get away with. in malta what we do now is cut out the dpf then fit in on a flange come mot time

But stop start helps our polluted cities like here in London where average traffic speeds are single-digit and sooooo many red lights.

We can't afford any idling when still here. Not a stop/start thing but while on the subject it makes me cross when I see lorries, mini cabs and busses sitting parked eating a sandwich, running the engine and pumping out C02.

youre kidding yourself if you think stop/start helps air pollution. the difference it makes is minuscule. the only point of stop/start is to ''cheat'' the emissions test

Local governments have been told to start removing speed humps too. The Highways Agency has been given £100 million by the Government to improve air quality by 2021.

On DPF's - mine clogs up all the time. But I'd rather have it catching whatever it can.

No it's just one of the many things cities need so us humans can breathe.

Speed humps, stopping 'idlers' when parked, stop start, EURO6 lorries, we need a raft of measures to clean up the air.

What's your data point that stop/start does not help to reduce air pollution?

Happy to be convinced otherwise.

stop start is like putting out a forest fire with a pipette. many of these green and so called environmental friendly solutions are a con - take hybrids for example, are we actually saying that to reduce co2 were gonna fit 2 engines in cars? 1 of which needs rocks to be mined and shipped thousands of miles back and forth?
