Strange intermittent noise

Hi all,

My car has developed a strange noise when driving but it doesn't happen all the time. I am going to get it in the garage but thought I would ask here first fir any pointers / suggestions.

When driving I can hear a noise similar to when you drive on the rumble strips at the side of the road but not as obvious. It doesn't happen all the time and may start and stop again during a journey. It seems to be coming more from the rear but I can't be certain.

Another possibly unrelated symptom is a slight juddering under light acceleration. If I put my foot down harder it stops.

I can't see anything obviously wrong and otherwise the car drives fine.

Any ideas guys?

Sticking caliper? Check the wheels for temperature after a short run. John

Well it looks like it was the exhaust heat shield which had come loose.

Nice find, I was thinking torque converter, it would have been TC if it had been mine !

I think there may still be an issue with the TC which is causing the judder under gentle acceleration.

Have you checked for the caliper? Symptoms like running over a cattle grid, which is similar to what you described, can be caused by a sticking caliper.

Been mentioned before and I had it on my TD6. John

I had wheel wobble with sticking calliper and a very hot wheel funnily enough.
My TC was a rumble under light constant throttle load up a slight incline combined with rev counter fluctuating slightly but mine is a bit of an old banger. It is perfect now though after recon TC and rebuilt the transmission under the guidance of RRPhil.

did you feel it thru your bum with a sound like a thud-thud-thud?

My SC does it ever so occasionaly , always on slow acceleration, normally after a bump in the road or tight corner.

Nobody has been able to give a definitive, some thoughts are the transmission valve body, but the transmission is silky smooth, had a full flush and filter change by ZF agents.

Mine was like the cattle grid or the rumble strips at the side of a motorway, not a thump thump. Thump thump could be a worn UJ maybe or suspension arm ?

Have a look through this guide to see if it gives you any ideas

The main noise has been cured now. It’s more of a feeling than a nois when juddering on acceleration and is very mild.

Thats a great document-Thank You

All drivetrain components are good!

No codes

I (we) are stumped, but as it is very intermittent, i just live with it and Censored & Big Cry when it happens for the odd second or two!

Following the noise of the heat shield I developed another similar noise. When I checked this was obviously relayed to the rear wheel as it was extremely hot. Turns out the brake calliper was sticking.

I got that fixed then it starts belching black smoke on acceleration. Back to the garage to find that there was a split on the underside of the turbo pipe.

Next job now is to fix the rear wiper 😩
