I wanted an update too but was put off by the fact the latest version my dealer had was 2014 which is a total waste of time.. Wish it an SD card system that was easy to update. I done some research which suggests it updates through firewire straight to the hard disk.

I have been looking at this on and off for a while and drawn a total blank! If you insert a USB stick it will try its best to read it but gets stuck, if you plug a fire wire HDD in it does the same, the L/R interface is the missing key component and it's very expensive!

Where do dealers, or equipment manufacturers get the program from, who owns the rights to it? As far as I'm aware JLR own the program and although it has to be made available they charge for it, probably an eye watering amount. |

There is a special port for it next to the fuse box in the glovebox. The connector is odd from memory, though the tool itself is basically a hard drive. I'm not sure there is anything too complicated with the install, from memory I think it's done via the binnacle, don't know if it would just be a matter of a hard drive with the correct map version, and the right wire...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Anyone tried plugging a Mac with Firewire cable into the car to see if/how the HDD in the car responds?

I'm an Aftersales Manager for a main dealer and I have never met anyone or been anywhere where one site has every single tool required. Some are auto issue, others are up to us if we want to buy them or not. Like any business, you have to look at how much you are going to need and use them before spending the money on them.
