So.....

End of last week I get the AMBER message on my dashboard saying DPF full but I was unable to do anything about it then and there i.e. do a "regenerate" blast on the motorway. Later in day (and just a hand full of miles) message Changes to a a RED "DPF full take to dealer". The engine went into limp home mode. I tried to "regen" it like I have a few times over the years - but no joy.

I took it to the main dealer who looked at it today. They are saying they can't do a regeneration and that I need to buy a new DPF !!!!!.....for the pocket change (not) of over £2500 !!!

What??!!??!!!!

So - a volley of questions (sorry - I'm fuming)....

Am I being ripped off ? I have never heard of a DPF need replacing.
What could have happened / failed that meant the main dealer can't regenerate it ?
Why would it have gone from Amber to RED so quickly?
Has everyone who has "gone RED" had to replace it?
Anyone know where I can get it done cheaper in the north west? and independent for example?
Can I get one from a scrappers and fit it myself ? will the limp home mode clear?

I'm fuming that it went from amber to red so quickly - and something by design is now going to cost a fortune and to be honest not sure I can

Stan posted an extract from the WM last week which explains the workings of the DPF.

Just searching the wiki and I see technical bulletin LTB00513 (turbo drain mod) - which describes my problem exactly.

My car for a few months has been showing excessive smoke occasionally on acceleration and now has the DPF full issue which the technical bulletin says may also happen. Hence my DPF is getting sooted.

Does this mean Landrover should have done this modification under warranty previously or as a recall?? (note the car isn't under warranty anymore).

I also wonder if the price the dealer quoted was to just replace the DPF or to ALSO do the drain mod? I would hope so because if it wasn't then it would possibly mean the brand new DPF itself would need replacing in just a few weeks/months. That would be down right irresponsible of them. (....but I've never really seen much evidence of main dealers exercising brain cells before)

I'm no expert but I think most systems calculate whether the DPF is full based on data about the engine use, last time for regeneration etc, rather than it being physically full (although there will be a pressure difference too)

I suspect it isn't actually full yet and the link Stan posted looks like a good solution even if it is.

Landrover said they couldn't reset the fault so can't see an IID doing it.

in short on the turbo drain mod, it was never a recall, was a tsb and LR would honour it if the car was under LR approved warranty, however out of warranty you may struggle to get it done by LR at their cost. the fact it has caused damage to the DPF is kind of irrelevant from their point of view I'm afraid. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

One of my turbos has an oil weep, being monitored and to be checked at next service, drain mod would be the solution. I was told it was eight hours work and that as my car is out of warranty there would be no contribution to the cost from LR, even though it is a design fault. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Last year my MY2012 4.4 TDV8 went to the full red warning about the DPF full. Took it main dealer and they diagnosed a manifold gasket that had split that they said had allowed the DPF to get full with the dirty air and soot. They repaired the manifold but as the fault had totally clogged the DPF they said they couldn't regenerate and the only option was to replace the DPF filter at a cost of £2.5k - I got a clean done at a local specialist for £400 and it hasn't caused me any trouble since!

has anyone tried the cleaning company Stan mentioned in west yorkshire?

The car is in limp home mode - so it is un-drivable such a distance and certainly not up the pennines so I will have to remove the DPF myself and courier it to them.

Does anyone know if it is straight forward to remove? do I need any special tools?
How much ground clearance do I need? (I don't have a ramp only my drive way)

Used a company called Terraclean (I'm pretty sure that's what it was called) in Warrington on a non LR Car. Again the Manufacturer said it was irreparable and I'd need a new one at £1400 (Skoda Octavia) in the end they did a good job for £250. It did happen again 12 months later but this is because he should have a petrol rather than diesel and a local garage sorted it for half of that price.

This will sound far more simple than you may believe but, try doing a hard battery reset (maybe need to do it a few times) and almost always the red light will turn to amber on reconnecting the battery... if it does, DO NOT turn the car off! Go for a drive immediately at 50ish MPH for a couple of miles to self regen...

Worth a few tries before emptying your wallet sir
