Preheater - Battery Failure????

Hi All

Had my RR for a month now, on the second day of ownership I use the timed climate, it only ran for 20 minutes and managed to flatten the Battery!

I subsequently turned it off and havent used it since!

I have however on 4 seperate occasions had a flat battery, and the LR Assist guys have put it down the preheater coming on intermediatly, as bascially everytime I open the car it comes on, they said this isnt normal (Ive only owned a RR for 4 weeks so who am i to argue Cool also after I stop the engine and have a door open for a liitle while for example when getting the christmas shopping out the boot, when I shut the door the pre-heater comes on! Confused

Bascially just after a bit of advice on the matter and also will this be covered under the extended LR Warranty should it be the preheater that is faulty?! (Havent had chance to take to dealer yet, but if it wont be covered may not be worth it)

Look forward to hearing your more informed views!

Cheers

Gav

Hi Gav,

I had exactly the same issue: e.g. when I touched the button to release the rear hatch, even with the car locked, the blower of the FBH came on and stopped after a minute or two. Under extended warranty the FBH was changed to cure the problem as the ECU off the Webasto heater could not be changed separatly.
However it never drained my battery!

Ronald

Hi Ronald

Thanks for the reply, what age is your RR as the LR assist guys said it was a common problem on a certain age RR!

Also if you don't mind me asking when did you have yours fixed?

Cheer

Gav

I have same problem with my 1mnth old autobiography. Was using the remote preheater for a few mornings and was getting low battery message when i got into the car. Stopped using preheat but battery died last weekend and required lr assistance call out. Looks like the preheat is too heavy on battery.

Gav,

I've a 2004 TD6, bought it in March 2007 at a LR dealer with a 2 year LR warranty.
They changed the fbh early 2008.
Good luck.

Sorry for my ingnorance Whats FBH stand for Embarassed

I have had LR assist out within the last month as the battery gave up on 2008 Vogue. It was Minus 13 degrees so I had used the preheat function that day. Having said that the battery has sounded like it's been struggling to start for a few weeks, and certainly sounds iffy now. Also interesting that you guys have had the heater come on for no reason, I had approached mine a few times to find that it was on but thought it was me accidently catching the remote - maybe not.

It's in at the stealers on Jan 11th - after reading the LR assist report they said they would look and see if there was a battery drain - they wanted to keep it overnight for this Shocked Shocked Warranty runs out at end of Feb, so wonder whether an extension is worth it or not?

The Pre Heater is not "too heavy" your battery is just not up to the job, either through constant short journeys or damage - if your battery has fully discharged at all, this damages the battery and reduces its capacity. It could have sat discharged for a while with the dealer.

Land Rover/Renault/Mercedes/VW/Audi/BMW have been fitting these for years - I think they know what they are doing.

Did you replace your battery after it went flat? Or can we look forward to you posting in a few weeks about spurious error messages on the dash?

Thumbs Up

I now suspect the flat battery is/was caused by the FBH turning itself on randomly (2008 TDV8) - I've noticed smoke from the N/S front wheel arch when it's been parked a couple of times.

Again, dealer found no current drains or other other faults.

Yes, which was sitting in a drawer some distance away when I've noticed the smoke (off the key-ring to rule out accidentally turning it on).

But it wouldnt save you fuel - because your engine would take longer to heat up therefore burn more fuel for longer.

One of the reasons for the FBH was to reduce emissions - due to the reduced warm up time.
