United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Java Black
antifreeze

Right finally got around to testing my antifreeze, the mix is "medium down to -17" i am in the south east.

I have pink antifreeze in the range rover and some pink VW stuff in the garage, can i use this? 2004 black Vogue TD6

Are you going to do a full change? You can use any AF in there - as long as you dont mix.

To be on the safe side you could drain and fill with plain water - run for a few mins and drain again, then fill with correct mix of your choice. Make sure you use something you have readily available so you dont need to flush again next time though.

To be honest i was going to be lazy and siphon out a litre and top up with some neat. Too cold to be playing with cars at the moment so it was going on the list for spring. Might just be safer to leave it as should be fine @ -17 in the south east.

Is draining down and re-filling\bleeding a straight forward job on a range rover, seems to read that way in rave. 2004 black Vogue TD6

Manual suggests 2 years - however the corrosion inhibitor is generally useless after 1. And you don't want silting in the lower portions of the rad. It costs about £20 to change the coolant, so is a very cheap maintenance job and considering the importance of a healthy cooling system I'm surprised it often gets overlooked.

Where as from some research "silicate free, organic acid technology (OAT)" seems to what most manufacturers are using now days, pink? 2004 black Vogue TD6

dont know the chemistry but i have been advised not to mix different types of antifreeze as it could turn to sludge. 2004 black Vogue TD6

Mines is not due a service till June think i might stick it into a local Garage to do a Flush and re-fill .....

There are two types of anti-freeze, and they are two that must not be mixed as the Organic stuff turns to sludge within a few days if mixed.

Ethylene glycol based anti-freeze - This is Blue or Green

Organic acid technology - This is Orange, Red or Pink

OAT (sepcifically DEXCOOL) has been linked with HG failure and has resulted in large payouts in the US, obviously over here that wouldnt happen.

Regardless of what the instructions say on the back of the bottle you CANNOT interchange these two types. The problem comes when you dont know the history of your cooling system. Manufacturers prefer OAT due to the longer life between changes, personally I'd rather not risk complete engine failure for the sake of a few quid. What you have to remember though is that Land Rover WOULD rather risk engine failure (after warranty) for the sake of a few quid.

Mick - IIRC most Land Rover service agents offer "Pre-winter" checks for a small fee, they look over the car, top up the screen wash at their hugely inflated price, check the wiper blades, tyre condition and check the coolant that it is the right density and drain/top-up as required.

Excuse my ignorance but do you have to add antifreeze to the pink "cooolant"? We don't have "open" water cooled systems in our cars, even the systems in our intercoolers/ charge air coolers of the turbo/supercharger are closed.
