Guys,
I don't want to hijack this thread but I go camping a lot and find that I can easily flatten to battery of the RR particularly if I open the tailgate to sit on while I have a brew. Also opening the doors to access gear (stowed safely in lockable car rather than tent) turns on all the interior lights, activates the deployable steps etc etc. You get the picture, last two outing have needed me to jump start the car. Is it practical just to sling a solar panel on the roof when parked to keep the battery topped up and if so what wattage - I can charge the battery currently through the white towing socket so i would still be able to keep valuables in the car.

Trip last weekend battery was so flat car wouldn't even lock - could have been worse might have been unable to unlock. Geoff

This is very similar to what I have Geoff.

Opened out on the roof of the FFRR it will supply plenty of current to stop the battery going flat. You could mount the controller in the car, probably OSR cubby where connections are easy and then just plug the panel in when you need it.

Excellent thanks,
OSR Cubby is where I currently store the jump leads so there will be plenty of space if I no longer need them Very Happy
Looking at it, it might be better if I just left it on the floor so I don't scratch the roof.
thanks again Geoff

geoff , a tip that you might not know about is that if you press the front interior light button for 3-4 seconds it will flash twice and permantly switch them off...also the steps can be turned off but it's a pain to switch on/off every time.. ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan,
I now know why people get LED replacements for all the interior lights, I've always thought of it as a waste of time (and money). Geoff

LED's throughout the RR for this very same reason.

In terms of the TT I've had a host of different systems and would say that roof mounted is best. The sun always shines downwards. The convenience of a folding panel appealed to me also, especially when you consider the cost of replacement if you swap your 'van.

What I do now is have a folding 150w panel and when on site we place it on the roof with pipe lagging around the edges.

it works for us but if your'van is in storage it's not secure and may go walkies. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Just spoke to company I bought solar panel from, they recommend I remove panel and controler/ regulator and leave all cabling in situ.
They can supply me with everything to refit it to new van Thumbs Up

Was never really sure about a portable solar panel, but we do a lot of dog competitions on sites with very few facilities, other team members had the panels so I took the plunge.

150W from amazon £150

Recent trip to dogs unleashed in Bakewell, plugged it straight to the battery and the internal meter was reading 13.8v not even in direct sunlight.

Just need to find some way of powering her hair dryer and straighteners. Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.
