Is My Transmission Failing

Hello All,

I was driving my 2006 4.4 V8 at the weekend and as I approached the slip road to the motorway we have a roundabout that has traffic lights that were on red.

I left the lights and started to accelerate up the slip road when the car was revving but no drive. I pulled over put the car in manual and drove on with no issues.

Anyone have any idea what this could be ?

I have had no repeat of this since the weekend. Was planning to do a transmission fluid and filter change this weekend but not sure if it would be pointless.

Any help / Advice will be much appreciated.

How many miles has yours done?

Mine has done 100k and slips under hard acceleration. I have had the gearbox oil changed on mine already as the sump was leaking and it bangs in and out of gear at low speeds and when stationary etc...

Gearbox replacement or rebuild time for me I think.

cheers Alex

Before you get too excited about dying gear boxes get underneath and lubricate you gear linkage, your profile says a 2006 so that is the Jag engine and six speed 6HP26 box and that is pretty tough . Lack of drive is quite common when the clogged up linkage doesn't quite engage drive fully . 2008 MY Supercharged

Has it had a flush and fluid/filter change in the last 60k miles? If not I would look to getting this done. ______________________________

Sorry just read you were doing trans service this weekend. It could be a waste of money. But I think worth a try. If it's never had a service the valve body could be affected by accumulated particles.

You could try some Dr Tranny after the service. See you it goes first. ______________________________

You could drain the fluid and see if there are any particles in it. Also check the filter. If there are particles in them then your clutch in the TC could be worn out. If the filter is getting clogged with the stuff the pump then cant build enough pressure to let your TC work.

So a drain and filter change may keep you going but if the TC is gone you will eventually get caught.

Mine is off having surgery on the gearbox.... Big Cry

best of luck

+1 for lubrication of the gear linkage.

6HP box is pretty tough not heard of too many total failures yet.

The fact it works fine most of the time would indicate it is probably OK.

Do that first before you go and spend thousands on a new box. It's free and may sort it! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Firstly, Thank you all for your input.

I have been meaning to put an update on for a while now. Sorry for the delay.

OK, I have changed the filter and Trans fluid. Magnets were clean and there was no sign or feel of any particles in the old oil apart from it being quite dark.

Since the oil and filter service the car has behaved well, That is until today.

Came to a stop at a set of light, went to go and no drive. Tried it in manual,No Joy. Eventually, it went into a gear and i got home.

Put the diagnostic on and got the following codes:

In the transmission Section.

P0705- Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive Low Circuit)

In the Engine Section.

P0851- Park / Neutral switch input Circuit Low
U0167- Lost Communication with Vehicle Immobiliser Control Module
U0402- Invalid Data Received From Transmission Control Module

I have checked the battery voltage, 12.4v without engine running & 14.5 when vehicle is running.
Can anyone shed any light what could possibly be wrong. Do i have an electrical issue? or is it something else.

Did you live up the gear linkage cable....? Sounds like it doesn't know it's in gear. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
