United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Zermatt Silver

Good afternoon

Well I have now had my Range Rover with a Land Rover specialist
For a month now. At first he could not get it to drop
Any coolant but after taking it on a long drive and rechecking in the morning
He can confirm it does loose it but only when run fully upto temperature.

They are now at a loss as to where to look. He has added it to a national database
Called auto logic I think where mechanics can post faults and hopefully someone has cured a
Similar one.

They have checked thermostat housing, egr's and all external places it can leak. They have done pressure tests
And all plans have confirmed it's not the head gasket.

Anybody got any ideas? It looses from the max to the min line on the coolant bottle(which is brand new and the cap)
In about a ninety mile drive.

Thanks

Hi Steve,

I've had my TDV8 Vogue for just over a year and have had exactly the same issue as you: a slight drop in coolant level each time I take her out for a drive, enough for the low coolant level warning to show. When I check the expansion tank the level was just below the min level.
Then I had an EGR seize open and had to limp her back from Spain. My local LR dealer replaced both EGR and only charged 4 hours labour, which I thought not too unreasonable. However, 300 km after the EGR replacement I had a low coolant level warning followed very soon thereafter by engine overheating warning, red temp on gauge and steam from the bonnet. Happily I was not too far from home and was able to wait for the engine to cool, fill with tap water and get home. It transpires that the top hose had literally blown off from the thermostat housing. I have searched through all the forums for a similar occurrence and can't find one. However, I am reassured by frequent comments the the engines are very robust and rarely blow head gaskets. . . . fingers crossed.
I intend to replace the thermostat housing - - and ensure no leaks from it - - and to replace as many hoses I can while in there as well as the expansion tank. I really do not want any more coolant dramas!
I will follow EFORS brilliant writeup of EGR replacement (EGR valve replacement L322 TDV8 3.6, posted on 29 Jun 2015) as my guide.
What a great shame it is that the dealer did not suggest replacing the the thermostat housing (which seems to be a very well known leak location) while he had the top of the engine exposed for the EGR replacement.
Please let us know how your problem was resolved.
Cheers to all! Stuart

My low coolant was coming on no leaks at all the thermostat cover was done last year so no air locks, changed the sensor and now finally looks like it's the actual header tank as the float sticks on a lot of jlr models and my mech has done about half a dozen bottles so just ordered a new one so will try to get it fitted beginning of next week as nothing else has a problem i.e. Pressures, pipes all ok _____________________________________________________

Mine still sits around the min level. If I put more coolant in it just drops to the same level and stays there. ______________________________

New header tank came today so went straight out put it on really easy if you blank bottom hose off when you pull it off used a rag, take two bolts out new one in and save a fortune at stealers then keep topping up went out for an hour with coolant bottle and stopped twice to check all great no annoying 'check coolant level' if you need one try LR trade parts off the bay £35 delivered and a genuine part 👍

That's a good price. I paid £38 inc for the tank and a new cap from Land Rover so similar.

I have just had an update on mine. They have gone as far as they can and are now taking the body off
And stripping the engine!!!!!

I have asked what happens if they can't solve it and they have said give me my money back so will give
Them some more time I suppose. That or buy another?

Bloody complicated Range Rovers why are they so Loveable.

Well after a very long time in the garage they have finally got somewhere.

They are changing both head gaskets as they where leaking but it did not show up
On any of the normal tests. It's going back together now and should have it Monday.

Thanks for all the replies

Steve.

Some good news. Also it sounds like you got a few new things fitted under the warranty. That will frobably be the last FFRR that dealer sells.

How did they find the leak? ______________________________

It was the last thing they had to check so they stripped the heads
Off and he could see where the water was leaking.

Hopefully that's the last of it. I imagine it was an expensive process for the garage.
