Deplorable running boards - pointless?

For reasons that I won't bore you with my MY17 car has just gone and I am running around in a dealers decently specced AB for the next 3 months. It's a 66 plate 16.5MY and I do miss my MY17 dashboard display, infotainment and, strangely, the gear selector in the 16.5MY feels like cheap bakerlite!

The car has deplorable running boards which I am about to turn off as with auto access height enabled they seem entirely pointless - I find myself having to step very wide to avoid them and plant my feet firmly on the ground as I exit the car.

With auto access height what is the point of this option?

Don't know about with auto access height, but I've rather got to like my deplorable side steps.

I started stepping over them as they seemed odd at first but you get used to their position and me and madam would prefer not to be without them now.

It seems a fair drop down when they don't deploy automatically but then again I don't have auto access.

They also mean you don't give the outer seat bolster such a bashing when you get in and out.

I hate them - ours are permanently switched off.

I love them, as does the rest of the family. Definitely a "must have" for us from now on.

It probably depends on how long your legs are and how athletic you are but it is a very easy way to swing round off the seat without putting excess pressure on the seat bolster.

It's always interesting to me how different people can have such opposing views about such things.

It was my modest attempt at humour and I really don't like tham - have now switched them off on the loaner and cannot wait for my new car sans deplorable running boards!

I hated mine but soon grew to love them! They can be very handy when getting in and out when a car is a bit to close plus they are a bit of a head turner and crowd pleaser Thumbs Up 2010 defender utility

I think I'm with you on this one. I think it was MY 15.5 onwards that included auto access mode and it does make a big difference to getting in and out. Although I've noticed the system is better on MY 16 cars than it was on my 15.5.

I've had fixed steps and deployable ones on a couple of auto acess equipped cars and you may be right that they make steps redundant if you are fairly tall. Not sure about the wife though Rolling with laughter

Auto access was on MY16+, not 15.5

What ever happened to just pressing a button near the mirror switch just before you exit.
I know I love toys but there has been occasions when I do not want the car to drop - high curbs etc.

Not sure how my MY 2015.5 doesn't. If you have gesture tailgate and seat heating control on the temperature setting knobs, then yours is a MY 2016.

My next car will have these electric disability ramps. I don't need them (I suspect they will be a pain for me) but my 5'0" wife can't get in the car if she's wearing a tight skirt. As I like her to wear tight skirts, I'll take the downside.
