Crankshaft Oil Seal

Mine has started leaking at 63k miles and had it replaced. 15 hours and main dealer job rather than indy.

Is it just me or should this not have lasted longer.........

No probs!

For info, mines one of the last of the 4.4TDV8's just squeaking into Jan 2013 registration but a 2012 build.

Current state of play is its occupying one of the dealers workshop bays whilst stripped and awaiting a new seal to be found.....

LR specify 15 and a bit hours. I'm paying £156p/h labour as the mechanic clearly needs to be a trained brain surgeon and barrister before moving on to the rarified payscale of JLR. The seal itself likely around £20, but I'm sure extra noughts will be added.

My usual indy just didn't have the tools to work on the TDV8 for this job.

One tip I'd give is make sure the seal is ordered and in the mechanics hands before stripping down the vehicle.

Just had an update on the seal and parts system advises its out of stock, 'consult technical' with no stock ETA available.

Sounds like a manufacturing defect and supplier dispute under way to me?

I doubt the dealer will be paying the mechanic vast amounts, they'll keep it for themselves, sales staff and management.

Yes I know that the hourly rate covers all the overheads as well, but really frustrating to have a £20 seal go so early in the vehicles life and neck end of 3 grand to change it.

Oh, and by the way the seal is still unavailable from JLR with no communication from central parts as to when or if it will ever be available. Really poor service in the circumstances.

Meantime the dealer is equally frustrated having one of their workshop bays tied up with my car for 6 days (so far) with its throat cut.

Likely outcome? If I was a betting man they'll be rebuilding it using the original leaking seal and handing me it back.

I would doubt that they would do that, just because they have to warranty their repair work. SO should it leak it will all be coming out again at their expense. Not something that they want to do. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Workshop manager was on the phone today saying that was exactly what they were considering as they have no idea when or if they can get a new seal.

In which case you definitely should not be paying for it to be stripped and refitted twice.

You need to get onto LR customer relations to ensure that they are aware and will start to push the issue. It may help and also will give you good grounds when you need to have it done again to push the cost over to LR. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Already done mate - dealer is not the issue so I've raised the problem direct with JLR.

We'll see how they 'spring into action'......

Well, to be fair, there is now some light at the end of the tunnel.

Seal 'due to arrive' on 9th and car back to me by end of 13th. So that's 16 days to replace a crankshaft seal, two days doing the job and two weeks waiting on the part.

Normal for JLR?
