Another Rear Arches Thread...

Hello guys,

Was giving the Vogue a spit and polish today and with the suspension jacked up had a good look at my rear arches.

As you can see the inner lip has got early signs. Same both sides.

From the outside / with rear door open, it's as clean as a whistle.

Spent the last hour reading through this fine website, it's a well discussed topic.

EmiratesA380 also posted http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic37920....ear+arches and this seems the action I'll take. But do I need to get anything behind the wheel arch liner? i.e. other side of the rusting edge in my pics.

nicedayforit mentioned spraying engine oil around / into the arches. Perhaps this or another anti rust product pumped in behind where the metal meets the plastic inner wheel arch?

Or do I need more drastic action like removing the plastic inner arches and a more serious treatment.

Thoughts from you guys would be very much appreciated. Cheers, Greg

Rubbers filled with Vaseline.

There is a LR part which fits he freelander which does the job. Can't remember the part no though. They are only a couple of quids.

Both me and MJdronfield have done threads on this too. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine did that.

Personally before fitting a strip to cover it I would rub down as much of the rust as possible and then use kurust by hammering or a bolt hammer product to halt the rust, then paint over before the Vaseline strip...if not the rust will just continue to nibble away.

Shocking that a modern car can rust so quickly, imassumed mine did it as previous owner has a boat in Marbella and my car had a tow bar, I just thought he had backed it in to salt water but maybe not.

This method originally recommended by nicedayforit is simple, cheap and stops corrosion. Used it on a 2007 for two years and have used it in our 2012MY for two years and not a hint of arch rust Thumbs Up

Fitted the Freelander covers and loaded them with Waxoyl before I fitted them - no issues nearly 3 years down the line Wink

We did ours 3 years ago as they had early signs, removed rust, rust eater and then a two part epoxy mastic, followed by a submergable grease and freelander strips. We've taken the strips off today and cleaned out all the grease and there is no sign of rust.. we have even removed a little paint to check underneath and it's spot on. We used products from rust.co.uk that we use on a defender whenever we work on components.

We did remove the wheel arch liners, there is a clip that pushes onto a stud near the top that also corrodes so we got that and the inner arch while we were at it.

That sounds like a belt and braces job TJH1985, if it's in such good shape a few years on you've done a great job.

Are the liners hard to remove?

I think they were only the forwards facing mudflap bolts, two small bolts bolts into the arch and the top metal retainer that screws off by hands (its this that corrodes). To be honest we stripped it all down to check / seal as they also corrode on the rear inside of the cills which you can only see from under the cars or can feel if you put your hand and feel the very rear of the cill closest to the rear wheels (follow the plastic cill cover down from the arch and check the cill there) , so we did that at the same time.

We must have been to see 20ish cars when we were looking 3 years ago, and they had all started to go in the same spots must just be the salt on the roads etc the one we have was the best we could find.

Ours has had a good coating of DINITROL ML in key areas Thumbs Up
