Hello all,

I had the A/C checked and filled on Monday, and now the car is cool.

Sadly, the hvac system seems to be overactive. Even though we have the temperature controls on 24°C, it seems to want to run the fans at almost full speed and everyone in the car has to freeze.

Is this normal on this car, as I am used to a discovery rather than the L322?

If it is not normal, do you have any ideas where the problem could be?

I should probably mention that the seller managed to fry the main ECU by connecting a 24V battery. He had the ECU repaired, and the car is running fine, but I am wondering if something else has been damaged (temperature sensor maybe?)

I hyad a fan problem and replaced the FSR Final speed Resistor and it worked after that. FSR is also responsible for flattening batteries when the car is unattended .

Mine has a new fan and new FSR. It does exactly the same.

Before I order a new part, just a quick question.

The fans seem to run at all the correct speeds when I see the speed manually.

Would this indicate that the resistor is in fact OK?

Could it be the temperature sensor itself?

I would think the FSR is OK. Have you cleaned the vent in front of the cabin sensor?

I haven't a clue when it was last cleaned. I have only just bought the car!!

How do you take it out to clean? It doesn't look as simple as on my D2!!

Get a can of compressed air and blow it into the little grille next to the controls for the up, down, face direction. There is a temperature sensor in there for cabin temp and a little fan which sucks air over it, if it's all dusted up then it will send the wrong signals and you get cold air.

Worth a try for a couple of quid on a can of air duster. Most plumbers merchants stock it, or if you have an airline and blower use that.

EDIT: I meant cold air(sorry) There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks for that. The problem that I have is not that we are getting HOT air, but FREEZING cold air and the fans are al.ost permanently running at almost full speed.

Occasionally the fans do slow down, but they are almost always on full speed.

Do you still think that it could still be the temperature sensor?

I have noticed that the fan lights on the panel are correct in showing the fan speed (when the fan is at full speed, the lights show that it is at full speed)

Any ideas what the problem could be?

I don't know what year or model yours is, but the earlier l322's have a little thumb wheel by the centre vents, it's easy to miss it when you don't know it's there. You can adjust it hot and cold by the indicators red blue either side.
don't know if that's it but worth a try.

it does sound like it is trying to cool the cabin down, because it thinks it is hot. which may indicate the temp sensor. If it is seeing a hot temp in the cabin it will try and reduce the temp by blowing cold air into the car. If the sensor is clogged it will always see a hot temp and keep blowing cold air as it thinks the car is still needs cooling down. Its a cheap first thing to check as it requires no dismantling or parts. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ok... A bit more info...
Today it is 32°C and we went out in Blue.
A/C is definitely working!! When we were in the shade, the fans would slow down. I noticed, however, that when that little sensor in the middle just in from of the glass is in the sun, then fans speed up enormously.

Am I correct that this is a "sun" sensor? Could it be this that is faulty?

Any thoughts?

thats what it should do.

you are correct in thinking that is the sunlight sensor. It detects the level of solar heating the car experiences and adjusts the fan speed accordingly. So it should make the fans go faster if it is in the sun

still to me sounds like it thinks the car is too hot inside, so internal temp sensor. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

To clean the air inlet for the temp sensor I used a cocktail stick to clear the fluff out. Or just stick a vacuum cleaner nozzle on the front. Or have the console sides off, and take off the panel to clean it if you're determined!

I was thinking about putting some black tape over the sun sensor to see if that alters the behaviour. With dark windows mine doesn't get so much solar gain, so maybe the sensor is now "off balance" so so speak.
