Morning all,

So i recently had a smash in my "car" (not my fault) and ended up with a courtesy car, i was given a Mercedes GLE 500e (Hybrid), very nice too, plenty of power, comfort etc, the thing is i've now got my RR back and it feels so slow and empty inside, the steering wheel feels like i'm using saturns rings to steer it!!

So i'm after any ideas in how to get back to enjoying my "car", it def needs more power that's a given, its a 3.0 HSE so not much there in the first place! The Merc was silent when in electric mode but had a nice sound when petrol engine kicked in, my "car" sounds like a bloody tank and a poor one at that. it feels like its restricted when i put my foot down, it makes a lot of noise but does all about it.

other than buying a more powerful RR or swapping engines is there other ways of getting that bit more umph out of it and sounding a bit better? the last thing i want to do is get rid of it.

Any ideas much appreciated.

You can't even begin to compare these two cars. Worlds apart.

However, buy a tuning chip/ box.... I can't recommend which one but ages ago when I had faceliftef td6's they both had tuning boxes on them! Went pretty well (almost aswell as a standard tdv8) fuel wasn't amazing afterwards 19 L405 4.4 AB + Disco3 pick up + 800BHP Rothmans 911

looked into chip/tuning, think im just gonna bin the idea off as ive heard a fair bit about gearbox problems etc and with it being a high mileage car then im just waiting for problems. oh well what to get next then.

Get a bigger engine,i have the standard 4,4 petrol but when you bury the throttle it moves !

I had my old TD6 remapped with intergalactic space ship mileage on it and put a further 15k on it with no problems(engine or gearbox anyway), sold it nearing the 200k mark and according to the vehicle check app it's still on the road.

Best £200 I spent on it, the difference really was night and day. Current

I have had a TD6 for six years and can't understand why people seem to consider them under-powered it's never even crossed my mind. I find the car drives perfectly well for my needs and is very quiet for a diesel. Imo the car is designed for cruising at a modest rate not for rushing about like a fn idiot. If you want to rush about buy something more appropriate.

There are a couple of option routes you could go down here,

1. Sell it and get a petrol, preferably a SC
2. Sell it and get a bigger Diesel engine preferably a 4.4
3. remap it
4. tuning box
5. Just accept its 6 cylinder diesel engine in a 2.75 tonne car, its never going to set the world on fire power wise.

Personally if you like the car and its being good to you in terms of reliability i would go for 5. If you just want to spend money on it then go for 3, if you want to actually go faster in a range rover then go for 1 or 2 if budget allows.

Non of the l322 range rovers are going to compare performance wise to the GLE500, its got a hybrid system with over 400 bhp, and can hit 60 as fast as an E36 M3. acceleration figures even a 5.0Sc won't get near, its cabin is 12 years more up to date than the 322, and it features tech which just didn't exists in the early 00.

Ive never driven a td6, however i imagine that the performance is very similar to my D4. which has the same power and weighs roughly the same amount. Its not quick, no. But neither is it god awful. it will potter along quite happily (where the law allows) at a ton, it takes a while to get there mind you.

Speed is not what they were designed for, My 4.4 diesel is fast in normal car terms but it would get hammered by the merc and most "fast" every day cars. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I had my TD6 remapped by JE Engineering and it was much nicer to drive. I'd have it remapped and if you are still not happy you need a different car altogether or a V8 Rangie.

Don't worry about the gearbox, if that's iffy it's gonna bust remap or not.....

My TD6 was remapped at 6 months old by the previous owner. Was actually done by the main dealer at a cost of £500! Anyways, I certainly don't find it wanting. Put your foot down and it does pick up and go.

As for the effect on the transmission, that lasted a further 110k after the remap before throwing in the towel, requiring a rebuild and new TC. 2004 Vogue TD6 - Remapped

Sadly that's what you get for buying a diesel 4.4 V8 all the way, better acceleration LPG conversion gives better money equivalent mileage

To be blunt.....You can't polish a turd.

It's an old (design) car now and as you have found by driving the GLE the game really has moved on in and leaps and bounds. I think we all kid ourselves a bit on here, me included, having recently 'gone electric' I'm hardly using my FF these days and will probably do less than 2k miles in it this year which means I will probably look to move on with the times.

I would sell the TD6, don't plough a penny more into it. You will miss it for all of 10 seconds. I had one for a year, I thought I loved it at the time too but it was a great relief when it was gone.  2006 4.2 SC
