Gday from way down south in Tasmania.

I have a 2003 L322.

A previous owner has put in a cheap generic windscreen. It has no rain sensor module behind the rear vision mirror. All the wires are there even the fuses are still in place. My Faultmate has the software to diagnose it.

My question is if I get a new sensor module, plug it in and stick it to a non genuine windscreen will it work?

Any thoughts and ideas will be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Jim and welcome to the forum. I'm pretty sure that it should work with an "generic" windscreen but can't be sure. I'm hoping that someone on this forum does know otherwise there is only one way to find out !!!

Have you seen the screen next to an original LR screen and are there big difference in tinting, thickness etc. as far as you can see. I believe rain sensors come from a few OEM manufacturers and go to all the various car makers so I'd expect that most sensors should work on most cars. Since they are optical, it is good to find out whether the optical properties for the generic and original screens are more or less the same. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

AFAIK your car should have rain sensing on the windscreen , auto lights came a bit later. What make is the wind screen? the genuine ones were made by Pilkington but have a Land Rover logo on them .
I read your post on AULRO and I got three screens out of Shannon's six months ago because O'Brians hadn't a scooby how to fit it properly , maybe have another go at them because you can argue that the screen is structural as it provides stiffness to the upper body work and a substandard one will compromise it's structure . Hi, right... You will need the plastic holder (which comes bonded to your OE screen!) to be able to fit the replacement sensor to your new screen... I have just had the "wrong windscreen" fitted to my new car. The newly fitted windscreen did NOT have a rain sensor "so this is what we did"

Took the original sensor holder (bonded on old screen) and cut it off using a knife blade. Carefully measured it then bonded it back onto the "new windscreen" fitted the sensor and bob's your uncle's dog!!! It all works perfectly

I wanted to fit a genuine OE JLR solar reflective windscreen to my car (old one stone chipped but standard glass) the solar reflective glass is only made for the middle east market so does NOT have a rain sensor... Simples

Thanks for the info. Im going to my local LR dealer. He'll sell me a rain sensor module for $100 AU. Ill stick it on and give it a go. I need to check if he can get me the piece that you cut off the windscreen as well, otherwise I'll get one from the wreckers here in Australia.

Not quite sure how the Hawkeye accesses vehicle systems, but I am going to guess that it does not read the vehicles CCF and then only display systems that are actually installed - it will display all possible systems within an ECU. What do you mean by "My Faultmate has the software to diagnose it" (in which menu are you seeing the rain sensor)?

Just want to keep you from spending money on a rain sensor that will not work for you. The wiring is there on all L322s (I believe) but if your RR was delivered w/o a rain sensor it will not be activated in the CCF (car configuration file). In this case, even if you plug a sensor in it will do nothing as the sensor won't be 'seen' by the RR. If this were the case, you could have it activated - but you would need diagnostic equipment with this capability: OEM IDS, Autologic, BBS Faultmate, or our IIDTool.

Yes - on all L322s except the very earliest L322s (which have only been 2002MYs in our experience- so with a 2003 you should be OK)

I had a look at the Rain Sensor with Faultmate today - and learned something.

There is a Rain Sensor Adaption feature to recalibrate the sensor after a windscreen change. Mine hadn't been done when the screen was changed a couple of months back. I'll just have to wait for some rain (forecast for tomorrow) to test it, we haven't had rain in weeks.

The Faultmate can read faults (but not clear any) and inputs for the sensor, e.g., are the wipers parked. Mine indicates a failed RLS whatever that is (I will have to check RAVE). I'm sure fault wasn't there before I did the adaption. I'll check it again after some rain and use. There's no point in testing it with a garden hose. Ron B. VK2OTC

Well, after adaption, my rain sensor is working properly again. It is no longer necessary to have it on the most sensitive setting in the hope it might wipe the screen. I've had to turn the sensitivity right down.

At least it rained yesterday afternoon so I could test it - the sky was cloudless today.  Ron B. VK2OTC
