2nd and possibly the more complicated - smoke

I have had a good look around the site and cant seem to get to the bottom of where I'm at.

4.4 MY 2012 TDV8

I am getting what looks like exhaust smoke drifting over the front drivers side light occasionally. I say exhaust smoke because it is not black smoke or white etc. I am only getting wisps but it is there.

i do have a pre heater, that is working fine but has not been used for a couple of weeks.

I was sitting in the car this morning engine running waiting for wife, the car had been run and was up to temperature, when I got out to grab something off her, I could see the smoke round the front offside wing.

It seems according to the threads on here

1. diesel from a split o ring on diesel rail
2. Pre heater issue.

Any other ideas that I could look into ?

Thanks in advance. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE

Smell it is it acrid?
Feel it is it greasy or watery?

Thanks for the replies.

Looking under the bonnet nothing immediately obvious, and can't smell anything - as I say it is a wisp going by the headlight

Why would the webasto be on ?. I have not pressed the heater etc ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE

Don't know why or if it is the heater, when it is dark open the bonnet and have a good torch ready start it up and shine the torch in the suspect area to confirm where it is coming from.

The Webasto comes on to help heat your car up quicker. Larger Diesel engines take an eternity to heat up and produce hot air. When you use the remote key fob or timed climate on the display you are just heating things up without your engine running. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Is the engine hot or cold when you see the "wisps" ?

The car is cold, it is just after very short runs.

So working on the basis that the Webasto is firing up to help heat the engine - why would I only just be noticing the smoke now ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE

do you hear webasto fuel pump clicking sound, that will tell you if heater is working.

My guess is that it is fumes from your fuel burning heater, they exit from the driver side wheel arch on mine, but depending on wind direction the fumes could be blown somewhere else. The heater is designed to come on when it is below 5 degrees, it happens automatically. If you have just done a short journey it runs on a bit after you have stopped the car and then you see the fumes. I had exactly that just now when I had driven the car to the shops and back to dry the brakes off after washing it, perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, though it is not pleasant to be in the garage when the heater is burning off (or healthy). Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thankyou very much, it all now makes sense.

I haven't noticed it before as I brought the car in the summer, i.e. above 5 degrees

It has not been a particularly cold winter so I only noticed it now and again.

excellent.

Thanksyou 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE

When used for pre heat, the Webasto will come on at below 15 degrees.

I always thought my webasto was on the near side of the car, not the drivers side / offside.

I do occasionally see puffs of smoke from the left / near side front wheel arch area.

With the engine running the pre heat will turn off.

I don't know at what temperature the webasto operates as an auxiliary heater.
