Fuel Gauge stopped working?

........then it started again, stopped, started and stopped again Shocked (over a couple of days)

Currently still not working but every now and then it will display the correct level of fuel for 5 or 10 minutes then off again! This has been going on for the past couple of weeks Sad

Before I get the stealer to investigate at hundreds of pounds per hour as I'm now out of warranty Big Cry anyone have an idea of what maybe causing it? I think electrical as it doesn't display an incorrect level, it's either correct or not working!

I know there is a TSB for the 2010MY RRS but not sure if this extends to a FFRR Rolling Eyes

Help!

You should be able to get a meter on the wires coming from the sender to check it. You will need to find out where they are but that's your first move I would think. Previously..

On the couple of occasions I have asked for help rather than offered it the response both times hase been......well somewhat limited Big Cry

I guess the lesson here is that the search option is so good that when I can't find the answer is because no one really knows!

I booked it in with the stealer last Monday and for the past 6 days its has been working fine and then today for no apparent reason it's packed up again Evil or Very Mad Good job I didn't cancel the appointment this Friday so for the benefit of others and the search facility I will post the solution when known! Shocked

Well, a big thank you to you, and all those that do post answers and info. It's much appreciated. Very Happy

I've always found gas gauges very reliable in all the cars I've ever driven. It made me annoyed when learning to fly that the tank and fuel level needed to be inspected and verified every time before taking off. Finally hearing about a faulty gas gauge makes the task seem less annoying now. Bow down good luck!

Having just dealt with fuel pump problems I know that the two right hand wires as you look down on the connector from the back of the car are for the pump motor it's self. They only show a current when actually cranking the engine.

The other wires must be the two senders inside the tank but I cannot imagine testing for a current will help if your problem is intermittent.

Like Stan said first check the battery.

Good luck. 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie

I've just had a battery recall so it can't be my shiny new gel style battery Whistle

It definitely has to be some kind of electrical issue as again today it stopped and started again for about 10 minutes and then stopped again. Appreciate the comment about using fuel but you cannot go from empty to half a tank to empty again in 10 minutes even in a FFRR Laughing

It will probably be working fine again by Friday with "no fault found" but give us a hundred quid for looking Evil or Very Mad

Reality is it will most likely end up being a dodgy fuel sender unit but there is no real easy way to check Sad

Not without removing it and checking the resistance, if that is even how they work these days. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

There was a guy who posted that the whole fuel pump unit inc sender was a BMW unit (could be correct for a circa 06 but not much later) and that he bought a non original replacement for a very reasonable price.

Would be a very simple job if swapping the whole thing out.

But check the resistance first as NMJ said.

Access pretty easy under the rear seat carpet. Cheers, Greg
