Has anyone changed the seal where the gearbox wiring loom enters the gearbox?

I have just had a service done, and the stealer picked up that this seal was leaking - quote to replace £771.19!!!

When I queried the cost, they said the majority was for transmission fluid and labour - they would have to remove the harness to fit a new seal - I'm assuming you have to remove the gearbox sump pan and disconnect the harness from inside?

I drained and re-filled the box about 20,000 miles back, and fitted a new sump pan, so I'm considering doing the job myself and saving a few quid - provided it is do-able of course. Would be grateful for anyone else'e experiences. 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

It takes around 90 minutes, start to finish

Drain oil
Remove sump
Replace sleeve
Fit new sump
Fill with fresh oil

I followed this. Think it is the same thing.

I note in the photos RR Phil posted, the wiring loom wasn't in the pictures - I assume you disconnect it from the inside of the box and pull it out through the old seal, and then feed it back in through the new seal? 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

the gearbox needs draining simply to get at the release for the sleeve

according to rave you just twist and release the wiring from the outside, then lift the tab and pull out the sleeve. put the new sleve back in with a bit of fluid to lube and put the tab back down and refit the wiring harness.

refit the simp and refill the box.

sounds simple and not nearly £800 quids worth! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Well,all done, at a cost of £300 ish (£10 for seal, the rest on new sump pan and transmission fluid). If anyone else is going to change their sump pan / transmission fluid, I suggest replacing this seal at the same time - if I had known it was a common failure, I would have replaced it 18 months ago when i changed the transmisson fluid - have just had to ditch £175 worth of fluid which had only done 20,000 miles  2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

Is this just a failure point on the petrol cars or the diesels as well? Mine wants a box fluid change.. 2007 Vogue TDV8 with 255/55/20's fitted

It's an issue on all the 6HP boxes

If it makes you feel any better , you didn't get all the old oil out originally so all you just lost was diluted old fluid !!!

No, having changed it 3 times originally, there was very little old fluid in there, which was borne out by the clean colour of what I drained out this time  2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

ZF recommend changing the seal any time the pan is removed to avoid this situation.

Just a thought - as you knew the oil was fresh, you could have drained it and simply re-used it?

Possibly not something I'd do unless I was very confident of its history, but if you've already changed it three times previously you know it's good. 

It's a problem keeping it completely clean.

Doable but not recommended unless it can be filtered very well before putting back in. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
