I've fitted a transcend 220 dash cam and alls went well until I tried to hardwire it into the fuse box.
It works fine plugged straight into the cigar lighter but for some reason it won't power up when it's piggy backed. There's power coming from the fuse point but as soon as I plug in the camera . Nothing.. I'm wondering if it's possible with the extra hard wire cable ect it's possibly too much distance to power the cam. I also have it grounded into a screw behind the vent that sits in the wooden end pieces.. where's the best ground point from the fuse box? .. I have the piggy back attachment wired into a female accessory socket then the transcend cigar lighter attachment plugged in direct... it's probably something simple but it's beaten me ..

It wont be due to using a longer wire. Can you hold a length of wire on your earth point and the side of the lighter socket to check the validity of your earth point?

I shall double check.. actually meant to post this in the l322 section oops! :lol:do you reckon it could be the earth point?

Do you have a multimeter to check the connections? There is a convenient point to make an earth connection at the fuse box. Will have a look later where I put mine.

As an aside, I piggy backed from fuse No.1 which gives power when in ignition 2 but switch off when on ignition 1. Don't know your camera but mine has an internal battery which continues recording for a short time after switch off.

Previously I had it on another fuse and it was live on ignition 1 which meant when sitting outside waiting for SWMBO with radio playing I was recording whilst stationary.  John

It will be something very simple. Are you sure the piggy back connector is plugged into a fuse socket providing power? Is the connector fully pushed home? Has the connector got a fuse in it? If you look at the blade fuse you wil see two tiny holes which just allow the tip of a multimeter to be put on to see if it's getting juice.

^ +1 if plugging in to an unused fuse point. Otherwise two fuses.

Re earth point, I removed the end panel of the dash and earthed to the metal frame. John

So based on Stan's pic (above) your dashcam fuse should be in the top (top/right) socket. The lower fuse socket homes whichever fuse (if any) you have taken out. 2006 4.2 SC

Buddy, you want fuse 7.. it's the empty one... comes on with the accessories..... and for your earth, I found a point that was under the cupholder (passenger popout) that was part of the steel frame that supports the dash and earthed there, the biggest problem with the ffrr is a lot of the screws that are self tappers, only go into a clip that is fixed on to a plastic part.. you really have to hunt to find a one that goes into real metal... but as I said there is real metal in the lower half of the dash around the cupholder  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Miggit your a star my man. Fuse 7 and a proper earth has done it I was earthing it to a screw that was painted and obviously one of the self tappers l.I now have power.. thanks to everyone who's contributed..

The problem with fuse 7 is that it is live in ignition 1 position so doesn't switch off when you stop the engine. That's why I went for fuse 1.

Not a problem if you never wait in the car with the radio on.  John

^ Why is that a problem?? Surely your never actually going to use it without the engine running, so as long as your not in the habit of leaving the key in the ignition when it's parked then it shouldn't be a issue Or have I missed something? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
