e-diffs?

Is there any order or trim level that the diffs or any other additions were added..

My 2007/8 L322 has 2 padlock symbols that show centre and rear. After a weekend of muddyness on a very sticky caravan site my mates 2012 Westie had just one padlock symbol in the centre.

Optional extra that wasn't selected or part of the update on a later model? Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I believe the Rear E-diff was standard on S/C models from MY07 only and an option on all other trim and engine choices.

Just checked in an MY06 brochure and no mention of the E-Diff (no terrain response of course at that age)

I have an MY07 brochure due in the post any day so will confirm then 2005 E60 M5

The lock symbol for the rear diff appears whether or not an ediff is fitted on the 07/08 models at least. ______________________________

That's a bit naff....

On my way through some mud the symbol was showing locked and unlocked so seemed to be operational - though in truth I couldn't tell if it was locked or not. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I think that's normal, i.e. the lock symbol alternating between open and closed, when on terrain where you are just getting enough traction to maintain momentum but it's at the margin. Beyond that, when there is more wheelspin and the car is scrabbling for grip I recall another message, in yellow, in addition to the lock symbol. I don't recall feeling the lock going on/off either, though travelling on road and hitting a slippy stretch I do notice the drive being moved around to where traction is best. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Mostly an option - other than as stated, I think the 4.2 S/C had them as standard.

They are a relatively expensive piece of kit that most people really don't need.

Arguably, the display was also accurate - if not fitted, it just showed the rear as unlocked - which is accurate - there was no option to manually lock it anyway, so it only ever displayed the status.

Unless you really know what you're doing, locking diffs can get you into more trouble than they get you out of - I was always taught to use them sparingly as they just get you further from help.....

My best example was a hill climb with deep holes close to the top - caused by spinning front wheels

With the help of my lockers (I could lock all 3), I got further than most -

I still failed.

The guy after me was from the Clarkson school of driving - he also had lockers - but figured more gas would be a good thing -

Without locking diffs, neither of us would have got that far - I was lucky Thumbs Up

Phew. I hope the LR driver was not hurt, other than pride.

Agreed re getting further from help, that can be a feature of mud terrain tyres too. Better to walk the route first if in any doubt about it. Only Range Rovers since 1988

There was a Disco driver coming down the next track who must have Censored himself -

All people OK though thanks to a decent roll cage & harnesses - the LR, not so good.....

The only way to know for sure is to look at the diff , if it has an actuator motor and a wiring harness Thumbs Up

It's very sensitive to oil contamination with water and crud getting to the clutch plates and reducing your clutch travel percentage .So if you have it and the oil is black , change it . 2008 MY Supercharged

Looking forwards at the diff from low behind the vehicle, the ediff's bulging left casting is obvious when compared with an open diff's flat casting with the drive-shaft support protruding from the centre.

The main cable is at the very top and really only visible when looking directly at the top of the diff from behind the top of the left wheel, although 2 wires connect to the oil temperature sensor in the lower left housing obscured by webbing when viewed from the rear. The shape of the left housing is the most accessible distinguishing feature. However selecting rock crawl and neutral or drive to see the colour change is even easier!
