Diesel Scrappage Scheme proposed - we're under siege

Hi everyone

I just saw an article about diesel scrappage, it's probably going to be all over the news today.

Although it's aimed at older cars in built up areas, if it does come in, it will probably impact on the value of all diesels. I'm especially miffed as I have decided to keep mine, having previously changed new cars every two years.

Any thoughts?

There's some inconsistent reporting. Although the headlines are for a scrappage scheme, the idea seems to be a trade-in incentive against EVs or lower emitting vehicles. They also talk about older/more polluting vehicles, so it's unclear what the cut-off will be.

Of course, loony councils like Westminster are trying to push diesels out with parking charges, although that would presumably mean hooking up every parking spot to the DVLA data. On hang on - that's why it's all pay online or by phone where you need your reg number! Sneaky Censored .

This must be the only occasion I can feel virtuous for having a 4.4L petrol engine! And with LPG I guess I acquire sainthood!

Does that mean that if there is a slump in diesel car prices generally as a result of such a scheme there will be plenty of really good FFRR's at knock down prices for those of us who live where pollution isn't a problem.

I suspect that much of the pollution comes from lorries, buses and taxis. What are they doing about them?
Its easy to target cars but many of the newer ones have DPFs and are probably not the main problem. It would be nice to be reassured that the targets for action are the main cause of the problem.

I too have no love of diesels but this is just the usual political bandwagon stuff , a wood burning stove pollutes more in a day than a diesel engine in a year it just depends on what gases and particles you chose to demonise. 2008 MY Supercharged

And all they are doing is crunching up cars that have already been made (where the most pollution occurs) to then give the industry another boost to make massively polluting electric cars (manufacture and battery cost to the environment during and post use is terrible).

In a few years they will have another scheme to get rid of the evil electric cars with their earth killing batteries...........etc. etc..

Think I'll stick with my Td6 for now until hydrogen conversions and filling stations are common place (existing cars can be easily converted, but the politicians won't publicise this!). Tom

The scrappage scheme gave a £2000 towards a new car. £1000 from the government and £1000 from the manufacturer

The average price for a new car during the scheme was £12,000 (or £10,000 + VAT at £2000)

Essentially, the government gave an average 50% discount on the VAT, and earned £1000 VAT income on the sale of a new car, that would likely not have sold anyway. While there was £300-odd million set aside for the scheme, it was actually a net earner for them Thumbs Up

Politicians PRETENDING to do something, rather than solving the problem. There's a pretty big environmental footprint to a new car, ANY new car. If emissions really were the issue, then that £2000 would make a difference fitting those old diesel cars to run on a diesel/natural gas combo.

And why do people have small diesel cars? Because of the last government incentive. Diesel has some good advantages in lorries or big cars like FFRRs, S-class, etc. A small petrol engine is the perfect choice for a VW Polo or similar, but it was down to government interference to have diesels in those sorts of cars.
