Hi all. I am new to this forum. I tried searching for the issue I am experiencing on my RR TDV8 Westminster '09, but couldn't find anything that matched.

For some months, I have experienced some shuddering/juddering at low speeds. The issue never happens when I first start the engine, but rather every time I restart the engine after a journey - i.e. when the engine is warm. Whether in D or R the car judders quite considerably - it is only noticeable at low speeds. I have approx 85K on the clock.

I thought it might be injector related so filled up with premium fuel and added some redex and this seemed to resolve the issue for a few days, but it came back.

Any ideas what it could be?

Probably a dodgy EGR valve.

Ah yes that makes sense. Do you know of any low cost fixes or is a replacement valve the only way to go?

After putting various potions into the tank, I have actually found that repeatedly using premium quality diesel such as Shell Nitro or BP Ultimate seems to have largely cured the problem. The car electronics disable the EGR system after a minute or so of rough running according to my iCarsoft gadget and on my car no engine management light comes on. My mechanic says theres no real need to replace the valve if I am prepared to put up with the temporary roughness.

You can get them programmed out at most tuning places, stops them taking out the turbo's...  Pete

If it is the egr you really need to check on it, the egr design was not great and they had a tendency to eat the valve when it collapsed, not good. I had pretty much the same issue a while ago and had two new egrs fitted, fuel consumption improved afterwards as well. Does your engine squeak when you turn off and lock it ?that's a sign of dodgy egrs..

Yes it is the EGR. The check engine light appeared a couple of days ago. Plugged in a cheapo diagnostic tool and got this code: P0489 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) "A" Control Circuit Low.

Gutted.

Not driven it since.

I assume I will have to get both valves replaced, unless I go the remapping route?

You can change only one if the other is fine, I would make sure good egrs are fitted before mapping them out, they can still break even if they are not in use. Though once mapped out you could in theory place a blank in there to prevent any possibility of a breakage going into the engine.

That's anyone's guess. It could be fine for ages it could fail tomorrow. Just no way of knowing.

For various reasons I have decided to return the vehicle to LR Finance (i.e. voluntary termination). Before I return it, do you think the blanking option for EGR valves is acceptable or would I need to do the EGR replacement? I appreciate this is a bit of a random question
