I do worry that drivers of modern cars have lost or are losing the simple skills of being able to do a hill start or parallel park, or even to manoeuvre a car without parking bleepers.

The 'Controlled Stop' as it is called is still done today (at random, so not all learners will be tested). If the car does not have it fitted, then the pupil will be required to stop without the wheels locking up as has been the case since 1935. (ish) If the car is fitted with ABS then the pupil must plant the pedal and keep it there until the car comes to a complete stop,,,if they take their foot off before the car stops they will fail. More and more modern features are being introduced to the test.. such as Sat nav (if fitted) Aids are and should be just that..aids.. If drivers didn't drive badly, we probably wouldn't need driver aids. Cause and effect. Good drivers shouldn't need rules BUT we have them because we are not all good drivers. Aids should enhance not replace good driving practice. |

It's SatNav that I worry about more. The next generation seems to have very little sense of direction and an aversion to maps (though it might just be my kids). My 21yo son will get to the end of our road and ask "get or right?". |

It's the march of technology. I remember looking at a 100 year old Rolls Royce. The driver was expected to adjust the engine timing using a lever on the steering wheel. Who needs to 'adjust the points' or clean their carburetors anymore? When did you last read that the 'choke is automatic' was being used as a selling feature?

I personally think that "Driver Aids" should be not present when learning to drive.. that way at least they will know what it feels like if a system goes down in later years... I know what it feels like when the car wheels lock under heavy braking and when the tyres are getting to the edge of their grip in a corner. While it maybe a surprise to find your ABS has failed under heavy braking, I would know to ease off the stop switch and try again... What would a younger driver do?

And there lies a problem. People do not accept personal responsibility as much as they did and the issue with blind spot monitors is very simple, people SHOULD check their blind spot, but they won't if they have monitors, they'll rely on the monitor. Same with all passive aids. Then, one day they are driving a car that doesn't have them, except they will forget and drive into everyone. And the excuse? Not my fault, I usually drive a car that does all this stuff for me!!
Absolutely, but these are the aids I've classed as Active, as none of them do the driving for you. I have to come back on this Rob:
Be fair, it wasn't actually me who mentioned it. Drives: 2010 FFRR TdV8 Vogue - Stornoway Grey 2010 FFRR TdV8 Vogue SE - Zermatt Silver 1998 BMW E36 M3 GTII |
