So here's the dilemma - looking at about 32k for a late good spec l322 e.g. Westminster or Autobiography, or an early L405 with average miles for about 50k.

So what do the members think here? What will I lose most money on over 3 years? Will the late l332s bomb once the L405s hit the high 30s?

It's your choice my man but if you buy the 405 you are going to lose 20K if you buy the 322 you will lose 20k but not as fast and it depends on how long you intend keeping it.
I've had both and the 405 is by far a lot more refined but i find its lacks a bit of character compared with the 322. Would i change back to a 322 NO WAY 405 is a far better car if you want to drive it properly. some have the 3L but it wouldn't be for me 4.4 would be the way to go. (i will probably get shot down for that one)
I think the 405 would be my choice. Have you driven a 405 ? if not try it and it will be an easy decision.

If it's all about loosing money then buy a Kia for a few grand BUT if it's about living the dream get the 405 !

I doubt if anyone buys a used FFRR based on depreciation.

I bought my Westie because I couldn't afford nor justify the £25k+ premium for an L405, especially as it would still have only been less than 12 months younger than the Westie.

We are all a long time dead.....so enjoy to the max. My guess is you'd lose a little more on the newer car as it has further to fall but in the scheme of things not that much. Both are nice cars but the 405 is miles better than the old one. Just buy from a dealer and get the 2 year warranty if you can afford.

I'm a traditionalist and prefer the 322 for the time being. No doubt in time when the new shape grows on me I will eventually change bit no immediate plans at all.

What JLR are doing is making their top line cars like Bentleys which is fine if you need that type of luxury on a daily basis. Bentley are making cars to compete with Range Rover now as they want a share of the market. I'm sure the Bentayga is a great car to drive and the same for the new 405 but I think the latter has lost the plot slightly in terms of design - too bloated...but I'm sure if I drove one I would be blown away.

You don't need to spend 32k for a decent late model 322. Spend some time looking around and you should fine a really good one much cheaper and remember it's not all about the mileage. My one has 100k on the clock and still looks fantastic because it's been looked after with low ownership. I didn't buy from a dealer because I just don't want the hassle and if you can get in quickly with a private deal my advice would be to either buy privately from someone who's looked after the car or failing that try the auctions because this is where the dealers get rid of their stock when cars are traded in.

I'd agree in that the 405 is probably the better option & doubt much of a difference between the 2 in ongoing depreciation.

Simply i'd rather have the newest possible design & tech etc. as the 322 looks a little dated when seen next to the 405.

As a slight aside, i spotted a 2yr old 405 AB on the approved LR Used website yesterday, with 44k miles & was up for sale at £74k so must only have lost around 25% of it's value over the 1st 2yrs & with higher than average mileage so the 405's appear to be holding their own.

Rich86 makes a good point re cars being looked after but that is the issue I have. My 07 tdv8 has been looked after very well indeed which is why I want to swap! At 118k miles I'm having too many issues that whilst I fix them, mean that my wife is without her car for 4 or 5 weeks of the year as the problems come up. This year I have had broken radiator, rusted brake lines, fuel sensor failure and now front drive shaft and cv need doing. Whoever gets the car will have a nice one but I am leaning toward the L405 now, probably the 4.4.

The L322 has to lose less money - it costs less to begin with.

But I think the L405 is the better car and will give you more smiles per £.

It depends what you priorities are. But there are no pockets in shrouds.

The 405 will give you more modern looks and greater performance and refinement. You will avoid wondering if you could have done better. For about £50,000 you might find few 4.4s and if you are restricted to the 3.0 V6 then there is the background of numerous engine seizures (see threads elsewhere on here) which would put me off. Some older 405s can be a bit scruffy.

A good 322 might well be better value, and it is more practical, with tumbling (rather than just folding) seats giving a better load area, more loadspace and should you have to use a single garage, the slightly narrower body and better folding mirrors make it easier to get in and out. If you drive off road there is probably a better selection of tyres in 255/55R19, though that seems to be changing if you have wheels suitable for 255/55R20. On the downside, 322s will be at least 4 years old and the late models seem more prone to corrosion (see other threads on here for details) and, depending on what warranty you get, you will need to budget for occasional component failures. The saving you make on the initial purchase will obviously cover quite a few repairs.

It's hard to predict depreciation. 25% reducing balance used to be the rule of thumb, but the waiting list for new cars has distorted that. That may continue with Disco 5 presumably taking up capacity at Solihull. But higher finance costs, an economic slowdown, an oil price spike etc could change the picture.

I would say drive both back to back and you will make up your mind.

I am a L322 fan (fantastic design just like the RR classic, superbe petrol engines, quite comfortable, etc) but admit the 405 is a better 'car' (yes I say 'car'). The L405 is a 7 series killer, the 5.0 is great so is the 4.4L but it just lacks this strong Range Rover presence (IMHO).

I have had L322 since 2005 so will not tell you to go for a L405, but yes the L405 is better in many ways, yet the L322 has this Range Rover DNA I really, really like.

Keep us posted please as more and more are wondering the exact same thing. Personnaly, I would go for a AB Black or Ultimate edition L322 (anyone selling?) over a Vogue 405 for sure. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Whatever you eventually decide on it will be a compromise as is always the case.

I was in a situation similar to yours with my previous Vogue petrol. High mileage and a beautifully smooth and silent engine but at 120,000 miles I was nervous that something expensive would go very soon although it was sold in almost perfect condition to the new lucky owner - inevitably I had spent a small fortune on the various bits and pieces over the years.

There will always be better gadgets, smoother engines, etc, but I do feel that a later L322 will stand you in good stead if you're sensible and find one at the right price. You could then upgrade again in another two or three years when the 405 has depreciated even more and there's more choice and you will get more bang for your buck. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze
