To tint or not to tint

I'm considering tints on my 2010 vogue, but worried it will affect the electro chromatic thingy in the door mirrors. Is the sensor in the rear view mirror or the door mirrors. Thanks steve. [/u]

The lower ambient light levels inside the car and the lower light levels from headlights behind you will affect the interior mirror auto-dimming, and the door mirrors are controlled by the interior mirror over the LIN bus, so yes in short. The sensor is in the interior rear view mirror. Are you sure the doors have the electrochromatic glass? I thought it was only on Vogue SE and A/B. Easy to tell as there's 4 wires on the dimming ones and only 2 on the non dimming.

Not only that but IMHO aftermarket tints look poo what with showing up the HRW elements, oh and depending on the type of film used they can also do for your radio reception. Factory tinted glass doesn't have any of the unwanted side effects.

The door mirrors definitely change to a blue ish colour when bright lights hit them. Maybe it was an option at the time. Don't want to affect radio reception. Thanks for that Smile

OK, if you look below, the bit circled in yellow in the light sensor. When headlights shine through your back window and hit it the auto-dimming operates. This one sensor controls all 3 mirrors via the LIN bus

But if the tint is cutting down the light from a car following to the extent that the auto dim won't operate then it propably doesn't need to dim the mirrors anyway, making the system redundant?, if you know what I mean.

Or, you could tint the side windows and not the rear.

Honestly doesn't make a blind bit of difference, I have heavy factory tints to the rear and my electrochromatic thingys work a treat. Thumbs Up

The cars with factory tints may be calibrated differently. My current car has factory tints and is fine. A previous one came with aftermarket tints and it stopped the auto dim function form working. I removed the film and all was well again.

I used to use proper custom fit blinds in the rear of my td6 and thought they were better as you could take them out in the winter etc.....

The shades are for the lot.... the rear window is 2 pieces making 8....

Can also have window down in summer without wasps coming in....

Best of both worlds to me......

I have tints, good fitting so assume factory fit.
Often the door mirrors still show white headlights. I just put a finger over the rear view mirror sensor and they turn blue.
