battery drains down if car not use every couple of days

HI folks

i have noticed that if i dont drive the car for a few days, it tends to have a flat battery; Big Cry,its fine if i use it even on a short run, it will start fine for say two or three days but any longer it will be flat;

the battery is about a year old so i don't believe its that; but it has been suggested by powerfull.co.uk, that it could be the final stage resistor on the heater;

they mention that it is about a 10 min job to change and mentions a link on bimma.me.uk ? but not found it;

has anyone changed this resistor and if so is there a talk through on how to do it ?

any help would be helpful Bow down

thanks for the link paul, strange that Dan is saying it is access from the passenger side, where as simon from powerful.co.uk mentions taking the side panel off next to the pedals and is a 10min job, ?

it seems that the guys here are saying its around 30mins and talking off from the passenger side ? is it perhaps easier from one side then the other ??? Whistle

I did mine from the drivers side on my UK car. Not sure if the FSR is in a different position if the steering wheel is on the "wrong" side. Laughing

You do need to be a contortionist and work by feel as its a blind job to do.

I did mine and it made no difference at all Rolling Eyes but some say it worked for them GONE 2010 Facelifted 3.6 TDV8 - Stornoway Grey + 22" Overfinch Olympus

sounds a bit awkward being a blind job,? its bad enough if i can see what im doing never alone not Embarassed

there is nothing wrong with the heater and speeds, im just thinking of changing it as its been suggested it might be the cause of running the battery down,,,??? perhaps i will leave it be and use the car every day Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Before you consider replacing the fsr I'd be inclined to remove the maxi-fuse 64 50A on the front fuse board for a couple of days and see what happens
It's the supply to the blower motor and is the large (red) fuse at the extreme rhs of the fuse board.
The battery drain may be a fsr problem but then again it may not. Thumbs Up

thanks for the suggestions i will try the fuse first and see what occurs; i have checked the boot and seems ok;

ive had minus temp here the last 3days in the morning as sitting in a valley and not used the car for three days, just tried to start it and after the pre heat, it started with plenty of cranking power!!! and would have expected it not to start so a bit of uncertainty creeps in;

but if the FSR can cause a drain fault, would it be more a chance that this would be the reason if i had obvious issues with blower speeds etc ?, as i dont??

not easy questions to answer i guess, but ll i know is using the car on a daily or every few days, gives me no starting issues,, but hey elimination is the key aye, so i will pull the red fuse and leave the car for a week and see what occurs,

a silly question perhaps, but due to the systems running in the background which can be heard when you first switched off, i assume nothing remains powered up long term, when the car is asleep ?

Does the small red led next to the gear selector go off after about 15minutes or stay on permanently.
It should go off. Thumbs Up

hi

no it does go off so nothing is visibly on and no noises etc

i often wonder when i go to the car sometimes and unlock it to get something out, and hear things start running under the hood as soon as i have pressed the keyfob!!

and wonder it that is helping matters drawing from a battery is not having a charge put through it ?

but i guess they are all the same and is normal; ? i dont know what i hear but sounds like a fan of some sort ? with the heater turned off?

^ It means one of the 30+ ecu's hasn't switched off when the ignition key was removed and as such there will be a current drain which may be significant or not.
I presume from your question your light stays on? If so I'm afraid it is a case of methodically pulling fuses one by one and measuring the current drain.
Does your sat nav red led go off when the car is closed down?

Would be worth confirming what your battery leakage rate actually is - is a very simple test. I have a similar issue but not quite so bad. I measured the battery drain current earlier today at 0.19 amps which is ok - think my issue is just a dodgy battery. There is another thread on here where someone measured 0.7 amps which would flatten it quite quickly.
cheers, Jon.

I would have thought 0.19 to be on the high side - I'm far from an expert but would expect below 0.1

As nicedayforit suggested - knowing which circuit was pulling the current helps you make a more informed decision

Headlight wiper arms not parking correctly can also cause a battery drain on the earlier models
Mine is slow to start sometimes after being parked for a week but I only do a few short journeys at the weekend
