Hi guys

So what are we saying, if I just drain out the red ATF will it not all come out ? would it not be enough to make a difference or do you have to actually flush it out. Not sure where the cooler return is that Miggit suggested ? I was just going to drain one out and put the other in with a pump. 2006 3.0 TD6 Vogue Black - sold

The TC stays full of oil and it won't drain... Only half the oil comes out on a change....

So you need to do it 3-4 times to get a decent quantity of new oil in, just take it for a quick drive between changes, it'll take about 15 ltrs to do it though.... Pete

When I did my TD6 with the GM5L40E gearbox, I first dropped the sump and cleaned it out and changed the filter... this got about 4 litres out.

Then rigged a way of filling the gearbox with oil via a pipe and funnel, removed the cooler return pipe from the gearbox and fed it to a large container that I had marked with 1 litre steps.... You then fill the gearbox with oil about 4 litres as that is what came out.. start the engine and cycle through the gears P-R-N-D, D-N-R-P, pausing in each mode, and this should pump about 2 litres out the box..... FYI as long as the car is in Park with the engine running there shouldn't be any oil pumped from the box... so you can just top up the box and start again... eventually the oil coming from the cooler return will turn colour... In my case it was from a dirty brown to light red... yours should go from red to straw Very Happy

Once that had happened I refitted the cooler return and then did the final top up... which in the case of the GM5L40E requires it being done between 30 / 40 deg C I think ( don't take that as gospel CHECK!!) Which did require the use of a Gap IID tool, to monitor the gearbox oil temp Thumbs Up

Whistle on a smug note, having the BT IID tool made this really easy as I could leave the car in the air on the lift and see the temp on my phone Mr. Green

It doesn't require the use of a lift to do this job, it can be done at ground level... BUT the ground has to be flat in every direction Wink

Oh and you'll use a bit more oil than is stated in the book, mine should have been 12 lts and I think I put 15 lts through to get it clean Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Just to add.
Paul has described procedure for TD6. From your avatar you have a 4.4? Procedure is pretty much the same.

If you are doing the above then ease the filler plug to ensure it will unscrew but don't remove it. Remove the drain plug and drain the box. Then take the filler plug out. As your engine will not be running, if you don't do that you will get an armful of fluid out of the filler plug as the TC drains down. Shocked

Gearbox fluid - drain & refill

Drain
1. Position vehicle on lift.
WARNING: Observe due care when draining
gearbox fluid as the fluid can be very hot.
2. Apply handbrake and position chocks under
front and rear wheels.
3. Position container under gearbox.
NOTE: The fluid should be drained with the
transmission at normal operating temperature.
4. Clean area around drain plug.
5. Remove drain plug and discard sealing washer.
6. Allow fluid to drain.
7. Clean sump drain plug, fit new sealing washer
and tighten to 25 Nm (18 lbf.ft).
1. Clean area around filler/level plug.
2. Remove filler/level plug and discard sealing
washer.
3. Add 3.5 to 4.0 litres of correct fluid through
gearbox level/filler hole.
4. Check and top-up fluid level.

Check/top-up

CAUTION: The gearbox fluid level must only
be checked when the temperature of the
fluid is between 30 C and 40 C. The
reading obtained will be incorrect if the fluid
is outside this temperature range.
4. Start engine, move selector lever from 'P'
through all gear positions, pausing in each gear
position for 2-3 seconds and return to 'P'
position.
5. Clean area around filler/level plug.
6. With the engine running, remove filler/level plug
and allow excess fluid to drain off.
WARNING: Observe due care when draining
gearbox fluid as the fluid can be very hot.
7. If no fluid loss is apparent when filler/level plug
is removed, with the engine at idle, continue to
fill gearbox with recommended fluid until a
small thread of fluid runs from oil filler/level plug
hole.
WARNING: Avoid excessive skin contact
with mineral oil. Mineral oils remove the
natural fats from the skin, leading to
dryness, irritation and dermatitis.
8. Move selector lever from 'P' through each gear
position and return to 'P' , allowing any excess
fluid to drain off.
9. Fit new sealing washer and tighten filler/level
plug to 35 Nm (26 lbf.ft).

as you are doing a full change including filter you won't initially have the engine running until you get to the refill stage.

Thumbs Up John

Well it's good to know that it can be done Thumbs Up

FYI the cooler return pipe is the one that goes to the passenger side of the gearbox on a RHD car (std English)..

Whistle Think I may have inverted another term there chaps.."English standard drive".. a car with the steering wheel on the right side or should that be correct side Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

It should be "RHD". As in England, Japan, South Africa, Republic of Ireland etc (not forgetting Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter John

Whistle We invented right hand drive... so I think it's reasonable to call it English Standard Drive.... bit like GMT... just because everyone else has their own take on which side the steering wheel should be.. doesn't mean that we shouldn't have ESD Whistle Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Just to clarify, on the 5HP24 the hot oil leaves the transmission from the port on the LH side of the casing (i.e. the pipe with the banjo bolt) and returns from the cooler through the port on the RH side of the casing (i.e. the one at the front facing forwards)

Shocked I could have sworn that RAVE shows the near side as the return... but to be fair it's as clear as mud and Phil knows his stuff when it comes to all things ZF so I'd go with wot he says Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Yes, rather unfortunately, RAVE contradicts itself regarding the cooler connections

I believe that it’s this diagram which shows the pipework to the connections on the cooler transposed :

So the banjo bolt is the feed and the straight coupling is the return.... which is easier to connect to a hose to dump the fluid in to your measuring container Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Update

Dear All

Here is what I did, Not done whole job yet but made a start. Bought 10 ltrs of correct fluid LT71141 and a 500cc oil pump. Ran car for little run to get warm. Lifted up suspension to highest as don't have pit or ramps. Checked I could undo filler bolt, in fact took it out, here's a question. The engine is off now and took out filler and only a small trickle came out, is that correct ? then removed drain plug and got out all that would come out and measured it and only 2.6 litres, ok split a bit so at most 2.8 ltrs. Then put drain plug back in and pumped in new stuff and started coming back out at about 3 ltrs so started engine and put another .5 ltr in until small dribble came out. Also put foot on brake and went through gears. Went for a test drive and much smoother but still very small judder on incline. so questions are,

Did it have enough fluid in it to start with ?

How many times do I need to do that ?

What is the actual capacity of the gearbox and where is it all ?

I have the GM box so May have a difference but I would suspect from above that your levels were low.

Level will be very low, usually get a couple of ltrs down your arm if you remove the filler with the engine off... Pete
