Gearbox drain

Changed the gearbox oil on the 4.2s/c today. It was last done at 100k by the dealer and it seemed about time now that she has clocked 210k. I removed the filler plug only to be deluged in a litre of black oil. I then removed the drain plug and another 3 litres drained out. I managed to collect a further litre from the sump tray.

I was wondering why there was 1 litre above the filler plug level? 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

When you start the engine the litre above the filler plug circulates round the system, so it isn't excess fluid it's required. You need to make sure when you refill that you have the engine running and top up to the level of the filler plug, refit the plug before switching off or you'll lose another litre

RRBlue - That's a job I'm going to be doing soon, did you drive the car first to get the fluid warm before draining it? 2006MY 4.2 SC

Thank you 47p2. That is helpful. When I change it again at 300k, I will just crack open the filler but leave it in until oil has drained from sump plug! When I refilled, I did as you say and filled with engine running, cycling the gears within the temperature range specified in the manual. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4
