Front prop coupling, anyone know the torque for the big nut?

Hi all, I'm still suffering with the 'ang' 'over..... This time it's stripped the splines in the front prop coupling, and it's being a real pita........

Two weeks ago the Merc waved the white flag and really gave up Sad , major engine strip and egr / swirl delete needed, so I blew the cobwebs off the ffrr and put it to work ( light duties Wink )

All was going really great, but on my 3 trip to collect another trailer.... half way towards the middle of nowhere, 3 miles outside Chipping Norton in a country lane.... BANG Shocked WHIZZ Shocked Shocked NO DRIVE Big Cry Big Cry

Fortunately it decided to give out just at a spot where the lane open up and there was a wide flattish grass bank to roll on to Neutral And then the wait for the RAC, not helped by the fact that the road that I was on was unnamed Censored , and the long trip of shame home on the back of a lorry Embarassed

The next day I hit the wonder web running to get a new coupling and to find out how to do the job.... Rave don't cover it Sad Neither does the web... lots of numpties claiming that you need this and that.... but I soon found out it was all incorrect.

Day 3, new part arrives, armed myself with 4" gear puller and spanners and threw myself under the car, only to discover that the muppet who said 14mm spanners was very wrong and I needed 2 x 18mm spanners to remove the prop...... I have a comprehensive set of ISO spanners...... 17 mm and 19 mm Censored Censored Quick call to a pal got me the loan of 2 spanners that evening.

Day 4, armed with the correct size spanners I successfully removed the prop, and to my relief discovered that it was only the coupling that had failed. Removed the big nut without any drama, using my Dewalt 18v impact wrench, and then went to remove the coupling.... Censored Censored Censored 3 leg puller don't work Censored Censored need 2 leg Evil or Very Mad Walked 3 miles to Screwfix and brought a 2 / 3 leg 4" puller, and trudged home....... Censored Censored Censored bloody thing wont fit, needs to be a parallel leg puller Big Cry Big Cry Got the hump, packed it all away again, and hit the web, got one for under £15 2-3 day delivery......

Day 5, I'm board

Day 6, Please Mr Postman... Nope Sad

Day 7, Sunday

Day 8, ......Not there... Evil or Very Mad

Day 9, ..... still not Censored there, sent an email, got reply "we had no stock so we had to get another one in and it was sent today" Censored Censored WHY SAY IT WAS POSTED LAST FRIDAY ?? Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

So I'm still waiting, hopefully not much longer........

And now the pre-emptive strike on the next problem... how tight does the big nut in the coupling have to be? from the way it came undone I would estimate it at around 150 ft/lbs, I can't find it in RAVE, that's not to say that it doesn't exist, only I don't know the tech for drive coupling nut torque and therefore can't find it Sad Which if I'm honest is just adding to the misery of what should be a very simple job...... Are we talking about the nut for the splined drive tube on the ‘old-style’ front propshaft/final drive?

Because this nut sets the pinion bearing preload via a crush spacer between the taper roller bearings, once it’s undone the final drive has to come apart to replace the deformed crush spacer. If the bearing preload is set incorrectly causing the bearings to fail the front axle could seize. Land Rover therefore didn’t allow its technicians to replace the drive tube which is why there’s no torque figure given in RAVE. Consequently, before the new ‘CV joint’ front propshaft design came along in 2008, Land Rover were replacing the complete final drive unit each time there was a spline failure.

Before Service Action Q041 was rolled out in 2008 Land Rover realised that it was unrealistic (i.e. way too expensive) to replace every single L322 front final drive and propshaft with a new one and so they produced a number of special jigs/fixtures and tools so that the technicians in the dealerships would be able to upgrade the front final drive to the new design. You can see below what a palaver it was, especially relating to getting the pinion bearing preload correct.

Arrr... I read it as the transfer box but reading it again and you're probably right with the diff... Thumbs Up

In which case, change my bl00dy tight to, get a second hand diff.... Whistle Whistle Pete

Shocked Shocked Well I went for bloody tight and all seams to be OK Neutral

Talk about over engineering something.....

It all seamed to rotate freely, so I'll run with it... as what's the alternative?... a replacement diff?.... might as well see if the original one brakes up, if it does, I'm in to a new diff, and if it don't then I've saved a lot of dosh and hassle Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Just had another look at Phils diagram from hell, and I notice that it says once the pinion nut is undone the diff has to be stripped and a new crush washer / tube fitted......... Why do they say that you can remover the coupling and replace the oil seal without the strip down....... this is also flawed cos they say to reference mark the drive coupling and the nut...... but not the coupling and the pinion shaft..... which is a spline, not a key way, so can go back in any position, and rather makes a mockery of the hole job Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Right, after a major case of Roverphobia, having read the Q041 instructions and tried to get a bit of help from local Land Rover dealers and Land Rover Customer service, whom are denying all knowledge of a service recall.... I spoke to the peeps who sold me the coupling..... They have replaced over 100, all f/t with a gun, and no failures to report..... So I'm assuming that the diff explosions reported on the web are more likely down to lack of oil rather than drive coupling issues. Rolling Eyes

The only thing that really annoys me is that, had I had known of this fault when I brought the car 2 years ago with a full L/R service history, I'd have got the prop shaft done there and then..... It would appear that although a fault exists with the drive line, Land Rover are quite happy to keep quiet until it all goes bang Evil or Very Mad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
