Front Diff/prop failure.

Big Cry So...
This has finally given up on my Range - completely let me down whilst on holiday with the wife and kids and loads of camping gear on board .

I've had it at a local gearbox and diff specialist who has confirmed the splines have given up and failed at the coupling.

Does anyone know the last recorded date that the recall was honoured ?

Have I missed the boat completely !??
If it's a case of call and try then who do I call - my local dealer (even if it wasn't the original supplying dealership ?)
Does anyone have the recall reference number / urn?

Failing that does anyone have a phone no. For Land Rover uk main customer service so I can call them and ask for advice

If I have to pay myself for a new prop and diff and fitting it's Ł1500 for genuine parts fitted Big Cry 2003 Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

If you end up paying, use second hand bits off eBay... much much cheaper and if they are the modified ones (and I haven't seen an unmodified one yet) then they will be fine.... Thumbs Up Pete

Do you think I need to worry about the mileage of the donor part or is it the coupling that is the only part that generally fails ? 2003 Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

Get the lowest miles you can but don't worry too much, most places give a warranty and a mechanic should be able to check it before it's fitted... Thumbs Up Pete

Called them, they searched my VIN and told me there's no outstanding recalls shown for my vehicle ? They didn't seem to know anything about a front diff recall at all (I thought it was a big issue??) . They asked me for a recall no. Or a service action request no. ?? I don't have either ???

What she did so however was look through the previous work completed by JLR on my car - this showed the diff was replaced in 2004 (the car is a 2003!)

However the recall was in 2008 I think ?? Do you think the 2004 replacement would have negated my car being due a recall ? 2003 Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

Also - as a credit to this forum - the JLR customer service asked for my VIN , once I gave it she types away --

"oh it's a fullfat , a proper one....sorry shouldn't say that really "

You need to quote the Q041 Service Action from June 2008. Land Rover were careful to describe it as a “Loyalty Assurance Programme” and not a recall.

Anything done to your front final drive in 2004 would still have used the original 'rigid' parts.

I think the recall was in 2008, but there were failures before that which would have been repaired under warranty or at the owner's expense - yours was presumably a warranty job if the car was only a year old. The problem seemed to have been caused by misalignment and I believe the recall repairs incorporated a joint to make that less of an issue, perhaps in 2004 there was no additional joint and so your car remained vulnerable, even if it did last 12 years.

I have had various conversations with LRCR over the years and suspect there might be sufficient staff turnover for the spline recall no longer to be in the minds of current staff. Also, my impression is that LRCR front line staff are more call handlers than technicians and need to refer issues like this on to someone else, they will just look up your VIN on the recall section of their computers and see what it says.

You might consider speaking to the service dept of your local LR franchise to see what they know about the status of the recall as they would be the normal place to get the work done at LR's expense if the recall is still relevant. Alternatively you might try asking LRCR to refer you on to someone on the technical side who knows about the splines. I had a problem with the recall work done on my 2004 car and had a most useful conversation with a technical person there. I don't know whether they still allow owners to speak to technical people direct, more recently the call handlers have spoken to them and then called back, less satisfactory but no doubt more efficient at the LR end. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Were there any symptoms? I had a whining diff on my 2005 S/C for some time, then replaced it with a genuine new one which was much better but then it started whining. It was then replaced with another new one which now whines so loud, I can hardly hear fthe wireless. All within in a two year time frame. I changed the oil in the current diff yesterday. It was like Bisto and the drain plug had a thick coating of a silvery grey gunge.

Any thoughts on what I might be missing as I have run out of ideas? 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

LR (Guy Salmon, Knutsford) replaced the front diff in my 2004 car in January 2012.

I seem to remember this taking a while to authorise because I was told the programme ended at the end of 2011 but as they had been waiting for parts to do mine they agreed to complete the job. Current:

Mine was done in Dec 2011 by the local dealer and I was told that it wouldn't be long before they wouldn't get any more authorised....on my TD6, obviously....
