intercooler change on td6

this may have been covered before,but has anyone changed the intercooler on a ff td6 2005,i read somewere that you dont have to take the rad out ,you can slide it out through the nearside wheel arch ,is this true.mine is leaking at the drivers side bottom.

An old thread, resurrected recently.

I have replaced a TD6 intercooler, but it was several years ago. It had many, many pinhole leaks and was spraying a fine mist of oil over everything. It's not the easiest of jobs, nor the most difficult. There is quite a lot to dismantle, then it just about squeezes through the wheel arch.

yes did mine and you can get it through the wheel arch

you have to take the bumper off and the fan and cowling + washer bottle.

Ok, pulling that stuff doesnt sound too bad, thing is when you pull it all and its got holes in then you have to go look for one without going to the stealers.

Adding some info to an old thread for anyone taking this job on. I've just done this and it took a full day and a half although first time I've done anything to my FF so it was a learning session also.

The info in the RAVE updates in the post highlighted (again here http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic20343.html) is crucial to getting the job done. If I did it again, I'd take the viscous fan off first and pull the plastic fan surround up and out to give some space to work. You need two 32mm spanners to get the fan off and some muscle without the official LR tools as reaching in and holding one on the waterpump and the other on the fan and giving it some pressure I found hard.

Most is straight forward and is just a matter of unscrewing a mixture of 8mm, 10mm & 13mm screws, bolts and captive fastenings. Apart from the 16mm for the front crash bar, thats all you need really.
Have a method for keeping all the fastening with the right bits, especially when it comes to all the plastic stuff that comes off the front.

Check the metal ends on the intercooler hoses fit on to the intercooler before fitting. One of mine went on no problems but found the one down by screen wash would not go on so I've attached the hose direct to the intercooler outlet and will investigate another time.
Getting the intercooler out the wheel arch is difficult to say the least, I took mine out the offside to save removing the screen wash bottle and with full lock on, it worked but its tight. Taking the old one out isn't too bad as its, well old but getting the new shiny one in without damaging is more fun. Don't underestimate the joy when it clicks in to place.

Allow some time to get the bumper, plastic bits on the front and the wheel arch liners all aligned for the fasteners to go in and don't tighten any until your happy everything is in and lined up. 2004 Vogue SE TD6
