French diesel (gazoil) UPDATE

Just wondered if French Diesel is the same as here in the UK? the reason for this question is that I returned home to the UK from France last week with a tank full, and every time I accelerate hard, black smoke bellows out the exhaust. I have since refuelled here and the smoke has almost disappeared??
Note: I changed both intercooler hoses two weeks ago.

Not aware of any difference. Use French diesel (no surprise Wink ) and don't smoke. Neither me nor the FF. Very Happy John

I have done a lot of touring in France over the years in a 2.5TD P38 and a td6 3L , both BMW Diesel engines and always found that cheap supermarket diesel in France caused a very significant increase in "diesel knock" and as soon as I refilled with Shell or BP the engine returned to their normal noise level.
I can't say I noticed much difference black smoke wise, but without doubt, my mpg shot up on better quality Fuel.

Similar story, different question. 2009 tdv8, just returned from France where I also had to have two new turbo hoses fitted. Solved the problem and normal power returned.

However, according to the fuel read out ( I have been lazy and not yet done a full tank to full tank consumption test) I am about 5 mpg down on what I have been getting over the past 18 months 30,000 miles. It use to be knocking around town and country trips 25mpg and long uk trips 28mpg, drive like a granny 30mpg. But now I am lucky to get it over 20mpg average.

Any body got any ideas?

While I am writing I may as well as another question. I have recently, past few months, noticed that when I start the car the rear passenger compartment fan is defaulted to turn on. It's actually quite noisy and it's only after a few miles I wonder what the noise is, realise it's the fan and turn it off. I am sure it never use to do this, having the default of on with the fan when the ignition is turned on.
Any ideas how to stop it?

Colin

UPDATE

found out today that the smoke problem is a cracked manifold on the near side, I had the offside one replaced in December last year, so another £1400 has to be spent Big Cry Big Cry
