Rotating Tyres

Hi Folks,

I have rotated tyres on a number of 4x4 in the past, in fact it was recommended in some user manuals. So question do you folks rotate tyres on your FF, and if so at what frequency? At £200 a corner I am looking to get the best wear out of them I can Wink

I have noticed that the dealer seems to rotate mine when it's in for its service. So every year or so.

Personally I don't see the point, on the last FF which did more miles, the tyres seemed to wear evenly and i didn't notice that they had been rotated...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I never rotate tyres, just means you have to buy four all at once instead of two at a time... Thumbs Up Pete

I prefer to buy all 4 together as I like to have matching tyres - all the same & evenly worn.

I don't follow a strict pattern, but I do run winter & summer tyres, so every 6 months or so I'm swapping them - fronts wear faster, so the ones with slightly more tread left go on the front.

Experience of doing this has shown me that moving tyres around, especially side to side gives untold issues with noise, straight line steering and generally less than good feeling.

Even with winters I mark the position it came off with a crayon so I can be 100% sure it goes back on the same position. Each tyre will wear slightly differently according to the position it sits on the car. Front and rear geometry is different and with road camber etc the side to side forces are different as well.

Anyone who's ever rebuilt an engine would understand this. If you stripped it down you always put things like Pistons and bearings back in the original location (assuming they are actually re-usable of course) due to them having "worn in" to the position they are fitted. Same thing with tyres, and the bigger & wider they are, the more pronounced the effect.

Another fine reason to avoid part-worn tyres actually. The odd one to match a set of half-worn (unrepairable puncture etc) is OK but I would never buy a set of 4 PW tyres for the reasons above.

I also agree with Dom (and Stan) as I also heard many stories about tyres changing location causing issues !!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I have done a bit or research on this, it appears most major tyre manufacturers recommend tyre rotation. In respect to 4x4 vehicles this is to maintain tyre wear evenly to prevent transmission wind up.

To help even out wear. Hmmm, so they acknowledge that all 4 corners have a different wear pattern which is PRECISELY the reason to leave them where they are. Like I said before, front to rear have differing geometry. Side to side and you'll find the tyre rotating the other way so you have the tread feathering going the wrong way, to completely ruin straight line stability for you. A surefire way to upset the way a car drives and wear the tyres out prematurely. Oh wait, don't tyre places actually SELL tyres? Whistle

Transmission wind up is a thing of the past BTW. The days of viscous couplings are pretty much gone with the arrival of intelligent e-differentials.

Beware of rotating directional tyres or you could have rotation the wrong way and the tread pattern won't do what you think it should!

Got trye wear on an edge get it aligned correctly.

I have never understood why anyone would want to d*ck around with tyres on a two and a half ton car just put them on make sure your alignment is correct balance and pressures and change all 4 when they wear out - that way you will be making sure you have the safest set up - works for me Very Happy Very Happy
