Suspension clonks....

Just thought I'd put this on here as it may affect others...

If I leave my FF for a few days without driving it, about 4 days this time, the first bend I get to and I get a loud clonk on turn in, then a second later another clonk... left or right turn doesn't matter...

Then you have to go round a corner the other way to "reset" it and it will then do the same again...

It will do it a couple or three times and then revert to it's silky smooth quiet self.....

I have been over every bush, mounting and ball joint, front and back and none of them have any play, in fact most of them are less than 2 years old anyway...

I'm not worried about it and not going to spend too much more time trying to sort out what it is as if I drive it every day it doesn't make any noise at all...

Just thought I'd throw it out there if others are having something similar....

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

Can you tell if it's the front or rear?

Not being funny but anything rolling about? nav / stereo Units in the rear? I leave the lock nut adapter in the glove box and it clunks about sometimes Very Happy V8 or else ...

How about this :-

Drive car... cv joints get warm, grease semi-liquid now, gets thrown about all over cv bearings.
Park up... grease still warm gradually migrates to the lowest point in cv joint /boot and cools.
Drive car...part of cv joint has no cushion of grease (still cold) ie metal on metal till it warms up and spreads.

The only thing about above idea is when they have play they usually clatter when turning that stops when straight ahead, or maybe slight play in bolts/holes on cv fixing points, that close up when everything gets hot.

Finally, inboard track rod ball joint (connects onto steering rack end), they can wear, again warm up and play vanishes.
I guess the only way is to list everything that moves when you turn the steering wheel and work through the checklist or just turn the radio up.
Good Luck

Peter

It sounds just like knackered front drop links... I don't have anything loose in the car, locking wheel nuts are in the bin... can't stand rattles and squeaks so it's nothing like that...

Both rack ends are newish, so are track rod ends...

I like the CV idea but the noise is just on turn in, I would have thought more lock would be needed to show play in them....

Like I say I'm not that fussed about it, just thought I'd let folk know what happens when they get old and grey...

Cheers for the thoughts... Thumbs Up Pete

When you say turn in you me turn into the corner? And if you go into the opposite corner it clunks again? If you go into a right right or left left will it clunk in both turns?

"It sounds just like knackered front drop links"

I bought OEM Landrover ones to do the rear (and eventually plan to do the front ones).
When i took the rears out of their boxes I noticed they were stamped with the Lemforder logo (triangle with small bird in centre).
I suspect the front ones are also made by Lemforder.

No, it's weirder than that... turn left... clonk clonk, turn left again as many times as you like and it's quiet, turn right and it's quiet, turn left again and clonk clonk...

Now swap left for right and right for left in the above sentence and the same happens.... Weird....

Strider, thanks for that, it's not drop links, just sounds like it.... Thumbs Up Pete
